Why don't people understand filter lanes?

Driving to work (Sheffield) this morning along the a57 there is a dual carriageway which eventually turns into a single carriageway just before you get into the city centre. There is always a huge queue of cars in lane 1 leaving lane 2 empty. I use lane 2 - its perfectly legal, helps with traffic flow and means i dont have to queue. However, people take a disliking to this to the point where it can get dangerous. I've seen motorcyclists almost knocked off, cars being swerved into etc. This morning i had 2 of them trying to force me into oncoming traffic where i admittedly lost my rag and just barged in in the end after putting up with this for 5 minutes. I did all the right things, indicated in at around the 100yd mark and waited for a gap. I refuse to sit in the queue just to keep these morons happy and would have been interested to see what the police would have done if they had seen this, Ive seen police cars doing exactly what i did today!
This sort of behaviour seems to be increasing all over the place, what is wrong with people!! Crap rant i know but lets hear other peoples stories...

Happened to me this morning too, some socket in a C4 tried to barge me into the cones after 5 cars had already closed gaps. The chap in the C4 happened to be going to the same place as me (I didn't recognise him) and he looked pretty sheepish when I parked behind him and got out of my car, he looked even more perplexed when I walked past him and gave him a polite wave.

te they need small victories against those 'pushing in' to liven their commute I actually feel a bit sorry for them.

Always been like that there, and yes I agree that both lanes should be used and then merge in turn at the end. IIRC Sheffield council were going to get Merge in turn signs put up, but couldn't get DOT approval for them (or something like that)
Although, to be fair there are a minority of drivers that come up that stretch like loonies, drive over the hatchings and barge their way in right at the front. IMO that's the cause of all the hostility on that road.

Yes thats the one. Yeah ive seen people do that which is daft but it could be a result of not bein let in so many times thus why i barges in after many attemps to be polite.Always been like that there, and yes I agree that both lanes should be used and then merge in turn at the end. Yes indeed it is the "you are queue jumping" mentality, the same cretinous as will probably be the ones speeding up to try and stop you from overtaking, or flashing their lights etc. when you do so.
To them merge in turn means you should have been in the Queue a mile back, rather than go one car after another in each lane. I believe New Zealand has signs that look like zips to emphasize it. Perhaps we need similar signs here to reinforce what a merge in turn actually is.

Tha law over here on the continent is clear: use BOTH lanes up to the last moment and merge like a "Zip" one after the other.... if you block a lane or block a "zip" movement you're due for a fine!!!In Germany the sign is a broken line as an arrow and other arrows merging in the gaps
We have a stretch of road near here like this. To make matters worse the merge portion is over a set of traffic light controlled crossroads, two lanes one side merge into one the other side. It's always chaos, and I'm sure it would work better if the merge was forced before the lights.

I am always curious to know, the sheepeople's that object to merge in turn, when do they think you should vacate the lane to be closed. 100 yards? 200? 400? 600? 800? 1 mile? 2 miles? Before I left home?
There are road works on my commute to work at the minute and the 2 mile notification has the sign on a single carriage road 2 roundabouts prior to the actual work, that will confuse the hell out of them...

On the way to Cornwall a month or so ago, I had a Mondeo move over to try and block me. Luckily I had just enough room to squeeze by, to be greeted by the coffee beans (it was a woman driving). However, at the next merge, I noticed her a few cars behind me in Lane 2, moving up to the merge! Maybe I educated her?

Im not saying that you're driving in an incorrect manner, but in these kind of instances then barging in does make the whole process for everyone behind slower. You have every right to filter properly, but don't say its easing congestion as its not, unless the tail of the queue reaches another junction (I don't know the area you're talking about).
