The MX-5 isn't a girls car - it is a car favoured by effeminate men.

Re Evoque - I see it as the New Freelander. It needs some pink glitter pony stickers on its back.

Appreciate the hard of thinking masses like to indulge in the "that's a girls car/that's a hairdressers car/that's a reps car crap because they've seen it on Top Gear, but I'd rather hoped PH editorial would be above such utter crap. rolleyes
Looking at this thread it seems the PH editorial team know their audience rather well wink

Just put mine up for sale, I simply cannot cope with the scorn being poured on my car by pistonheads members.

One of my ex-neighbours has one. She's female. And gay. Does that help?

Quite obviously designed with that market in mind.

Not a bad thing in itself.

Quite what it offers over a similarly priced Audi Quattro estate I'm not too sure apart from being less practical and having a raised sitting position.

Well more ground clearance and a hell of a lot more off-road capability for a start. It might look a bit soft, but fundamentally it is very much a 4x4.

The raised seating position is, IMHO a feature in itself. Besides offering mush nicer (safer) views on country lanes, being above te spray - I was reminded of this on the M6 back from Brum last nigh - even by a foot or so, makes quite a difference.

I'm assuming apart from the odd PHer who has bought one, 99% will never be used off road.

People who want genuine off road capability generally aren't tarty and buy a Defender/Disco/FFRR etc?

So what's the selling point? Smaller and easier to park than a RRS/FFRR hence appealing to the female market. Has a Range Rover badge - appeals to the trendy market.

There is no way in hell that car is going to go off road unless the chelsea mum is on her phone and not paying attention and subsequently puts it through a hedge.

There are several of these in the posher (non-trendy)houses along local hilly B-road muddy and cow-sh*tty lanes, where snow tends to cut them off in winter. I'm sure a lesser 4x4 would do the job though realistically the competition is a lot less stylish.

This is it though isn't it.

Land Rover have played it perfectly and marketed the car to a tee. It's perfect for the population demographic that are going to want this - and the majority (by a long way) will be women. Should be an absolute sales sucees (especially in Recession White).

I think packaging; it's a nice easy size for towns and car parks - I'll leave others to debate whether or not that is a 'female' selling point. the other thing is fuel economy - no Defender, Disco or FFRR can get close to it - and hence also the tax/green(er) angle.

FWIW, having driven a Freelander as a courtesy car from our local stealer, although it's not a bad car by any means, it is totally outclassed IMHO by the Evoque in terms of ride, handling and comfort, not to mention interior finish and appointment.

Post GFC, I reckon us paupers in the UK will see fewer FFRRs and Discos - they've got much less affordable - as LR push all the models up market.

I am new to PH, so first post.

I have taken an Evoque shooting a number of times, it goes through the muddy stuff as well as the other LR's there and holds dogs and guns no problem. No one has mentioned that I look girly in it yet...

I admit though, that I have been in major trouble from my wife for returning her car dirty!

But what would the Chelsea Mum be doing in China, Russia or the Americas?

Most of these cars will be offroaded as most will be used in less developed but wealthier countries than ours.

People need to try and get their head around the fact that this car was not made for the British but for people elsewhere with much more money. The fact that they will still sell a good chunk here is just a bonus.
