Would you say this was some honest reviewing carried out in the USA. these people should know shouldn't they?
Note the avg MPG of the 1995-2005 Gen long term test result!!

Do you mean the 15.2 US gallons for all types of use mpg? So just under 20mpg Imperial gallons. So "on a run" as you like to say 22+ would seem highly likely.Note the avg MPG of the 1995-2005 Gen long term test result!!

Well, off you go then, what's stopping you? Post it up on youtube when you're done.
I am in the minority, it would seem, as I quite like it (considering it could be had for perhaps £700?). I don't do many miles, so MPG isn't an issue and I often need loads of space.

18.25mpg (Imperial) is a fraction over 18mpg and very nearly 2mpg under 20mpg so not just under, it is well under!!As for the term "on a run", yes, it's in english!!
As for 22mpg on a run, you must have some very rosy coloured spectacles on today to make such wild and wonderful assumptions.
I worked out that I got 20.2 mpg out of my last tank without trying too hard, about 240 miles from about 55l if I remember correctly, that's a mixed bag of conditions, probably about half on dual carriageway, the rest on A roads or in traffic, mind you I only managed 17mpg on the first fill up after I bought it.
As soon as I saw the title I knew it would be 10 pages of avoiding ste posted by 300. If you go back through most SOTW's the threads almost always become a sort of buying guide for each model. With ex/current owners popping up discussing the cars and what to look out for etc. Not an 'ooh look someone's posted a negative comment about a US car' ... cue page upon page of crap.

So puttings aside the fact you seem happy to ignore several other posters who actually own this engine and claim to achieve said mpg. As for the term "on a run", yes, it's in english!!

What exacty does your Surf manage in town or when not on a run? And how many HP is it lacking by comparison and how many seconds more does it need to reach 60mph?
For the record I like Surfs, my cousin has one. But to coin an American phrase you do seem to be comparing apples to oranges.

However 22mpg from a 6 seater 1.8 tonne 4x4 isn't bad. Not considering the year and power/torque.
Can you site some other 1990-1999 4x4's of the same size, power and performance that achieve significantly better mpg?

0-60 - It's a lumbering oil burning agricultural vehicle where acceleration isn't even thought about. I have no idea nor have i ever thought about it!! Does 0-60 really matter to you in one of these? What exacty does your Surf manage in town or when not on a run? How I laughed at these types trudging through the snow as my forester turbo wafted effortlessly by.....
We actually enjoyed walking home through the snow, even with a laden pushchair. I subsequently laughed at the running costs of a 4x4 the other 364 days of the year when I didn't need 4WD or winter tyres. I run around in my surf in RWD mode 99% of the time, and even in the snow i only switch to 4x4 if i feel i have to, so the rear LSD does absolutely fine most of the time.
When i need 4WD it can be switched electronically or i can go fully locked manually, high or low, via a gear lever.
Equally the tyres last a very long time. Mine runs 265/70/16's and they have a shedload of tread on them compared to a car tyre. They should last 50K-60K+miles easily.
