I think, as has been said, if you're minding your own business and have somewhere to be when someone strolls up and asks then personally I would be polite but say no, it's just as unfair to put someone on the spot as it is to say no to someone.

I think it depends on the circumstances though, some people ask in the right way and others don't.

I still think it's more polite to show interest and wait for the owner to offer; if someone walks up and asks about the car I'm driving then I will always offer them a sit in it.

At work today a blue Lamborghini convertible pulled up and a an older korean man got out. He came in and I greeted him. Turns out he owns a bunch of restaurants. Nice man, but didn't buy anything. No big deal.

A young boy about 11 years old was also in the store with his parents and he was so exxcited about the Lambo. The owner saw and heard his excitement. the Lambo owner was leaving and the young boy was asking his mom and dad if he can go outside and ask the man if he could sit in it. The mother obliged and by the time they got to the passenger side of the Lambo the owner was already buckled up and had it started.

I observed the mother talking to him and he shook his head no. She smiled, said thank you and walked back into my store. She told me the owner of the Lambo denied her son a chance to sit in it. Poor kid was embarassed and clearly upset. I felt bad for him.

What's your take on this? Do you think the man could have let him sit in it?

I bring this up because I remember one time when I was in my early 20's I came upon a white 95 Esprit S4 (my favorite Lotus at the time). I told the owner its my dream car and asked him if I could check it out inside. He simply replied, " [I]this[i/] is your dream car, are you kidding me?" And then he refused me to sit in it.

For the most part I've always had a good experience with owners. I've had 2 guys let me drive their Esprit and they didn't even know me!
Your agenda is clear, although your use of could and not should is slightly confusing. Of course he could, silly question.

Why is there an expectation of an instant yes answer and a happy kid? Life is full of ups and downs and you can't always get what you want. A closed question can expect one of two answers. Getting the one you don't want is a fact of life, not the end of the world.

No, you can't sit in my car or on my bike.

not sure if this issue has been riased yet on the thread as I have not read it all.

I often get people asking about my cars and in particular with the countach QV get asked by kids if they can sit/go for a ride in the car. Normally I would remind kids that they shouldn’t go in cars with strangers unless their parents know and approve! Frequently there may be a group of them, so do you yes to them all or just pick one?

What is worse, is when you get kids trying the doors to get into cars and or just jumping in them at shows if you leave the door open. Even worse is when you get people sitting or lying on your cars to get a photo taken.

Everyone has the right to say no. Without criticism or comment. If people are cheeky when you say no, clearly it justifies your refusal!

Driving a Countach is like having a portable fairground attraction! you can not drive these cars if you if you are shy, but it does not mean that the public have a right to expect you to accommodate their wishes.
Try that at a supermarket cart park and see how many owners are receptive to you sitting in or on their cars! lol

I know how excited I used to get when I was a child and saw a nice car, so I try to be as nice as I can when I see a child admiring my car.

I had a lady pull me over as I was slowly exiting a family members drive recently as a 911 turbo was her young sons dream car. He was a bit shy, and when he came over, I asked him if he wanted to sit in but he said no.

It probably made the young chaps day, and cost me a minute or two of my time - well worth it in my opinion!

About 5 years ago, when I went to a Porsche show I saw a Carrera GT - I was quite obviously excited to see it and the owner offered me the opportunity to sit and rev the engine... it made my day as a 25 year old!

He may have already let 10 children sit in the car that day and this could have been the moment where he thought FFS!

Alternatively, a young boy may recently have shouted abuse at him and his car thereby shaking his faith in humanity.

Finally, he may have had a takeaway to deliver. wink

Some kids at my daughters school always beam when the Mrs pulls up in the Bimmer. She's let alot of the boys climb in and hit the starter button to much glee and laughs as the V10 rumbles into life. It would be miserable not to let them enjoy things.

I went to the Glasgow car show some years ago with my then 10 year car nut of a son.

We saw the new Bently Continental, about 250k worth of car on the stand.

I asked the guy on the stand if I could sit in it, and he said yes, ohhhhhhhhh luxury.

When walking away my son said to me "Dad, your a poser", I should add I was wearing my t-shirt, trainer bottoms and Nike trainers, the guy on the stand didnt bat an eyelid.

Having sat in one, I know why people with dosh buy them. So its not only 9 year old kids.

Acts like this are nice ones, but by definition that means going beyond what you have to do. The fact that someone didn't have to do it makes it nice ffs. So, no-one is obliged to do it!! It might not be much, but then if a kid come up to you in the street and asked you for 50p (and if you owned a lambo, 50p isn't much) would you give it to them? Most people would probably say no. However for a car, for some reason tons of people (probably without lambos, I bet) are happy to wade in with "miserable " accusations and "it's only a car/5 minutes/poor kid".

Nice house, can I come in and sit in your lounge for a bit?

I've always let peoples kids sit in my cars if I have the time, its not a problem.
Its really nice to see the big smiles and excitement. It can be a little embarrassing so I generally step back to make a call or something and let them get on with it.

I was at a garage once filling up, running late already and in a hurry when a bloke said "Would you mind pulling over there so I can get some pictures of my boys in your car mate?" As friendly as I could I apologised and explained that I was really late and just didn't have time. He gave me the screw face and spat out "WHAT, YOU'RE TOO fkING GOOD FOR US!"

I am not powerfully built but I swear it was only the presence of his kids that stopped me punching the ignorant fker in the face.

What a miserable git, I once saw Jimmy Saville out in his car and asked if I could sit in his roller, he said I can go one better than a sit in the car and duly obliged - what a nice chap!

I went to the P1 supercar club open day in the Summer at Horsely Towers. Amazingly, they let me in with my Westfield. My bright orange £10,000 was parked up with Zondas, 599 & Enzo Ferraris, Keonigseggs, Aventatodors etc etc but guess which car all the kids wanted to sit in? Yep, my little Westy.

The kids were in and out of it all afternoon with their parents taking pictures. They loved it and so did I. I really cant imagine why anyone would be so grumpy not to let a kids sit in their car. confused

It was a not-very-elaborate or subtle attempt to get us to notice that he owns a Lamborghini. Presumably so we'd all think he's like, super totes amazeballs.
In typical fashion he goes back and deletes his post despite it being quoted. Odd behaviour.
He is the chap posting on transfers thread that he was full of st and tranter offered him round and he just ignored him and kept trolling. Mildly amusing.
