I do lots of motorway miles. Cruise control, climate control, the ability to take calls on hands free (and answer with button on steering wheel are all essential, because its more comfortable and means I don't have to pull over for calls.

It's also nice to listen to my own music on my iPod ad-free and DJ free.

Why? Same reason I choose not to live in social housing. Generally a nicer place to be.

a couple of months ago i was taken for a ride in a fellow phers jaguar xfr. for me, the toys only enhanced what the car is all about - a dual personality cruiser/bruiser saloon.

in luxury waft mode you are ensconced in luxury with the leather seats and alacantara headlining, quality trim and finishes. the toys come in with the way the air vents flip over in a pointless yet totally cool display of engineering. the stereo is just fantastic, and every toy in the automotive gadget cupboard is included, yet it is understated in the way that many of them are deployed via the control wheel and display screen, so the buttons are not in your face.

put the boot down [as he did!] and the car changes its a proper beast both for straight line speed and handling, and the noise! oh the noise! that's when the gadgets go to the background. stereo off, display showing something innocuous, all there is is the driver/car interface.

toys are good in the right car, you;d want none of the above in a lightweight sports car.

More buttons/features is just better. Man logic.
Buttons can be annoying. The current E36 has climate control with a multitude of buttons. I find it much more annoying to use than the earlier rotary dial aircon. Rotary dials are quicker (do not need repeated button presses to get the temp up/down) plus once familar can be done just on touch without having to take one's eyes off the road.

Climate control looks nice though.

I think there's a base level of 'stuff that's nice to have'

I'd like to have

- Heated Front Screen
- Electric Windows
- Electric Seats
- Cruise Control
- Air Con

I'm assuming that central locking and ABS is standard, and the only reason I've included electric windows is that I've seen a few base spec small cars with winders.

Everything else I'm not too bothered about. Bluetooth stuff is OK, but I've never really found it much good for voice calls, fine for streaming audio though. Auto park is something id' probably never use

I like toys the point that i have custom made toys on my car

-Quick clear windscreen - have not come across anything better on a cold icy day
-Cruse - fantastic for motorway plodding
-Climate - dont ever have to touch the heater controls
-Auto headlights - its just one control i dont have to touch because from testing the auto headlight system seems to turn the lights on more or less the same dimness i would

Custom toys

-Under door puddle lights - Ford OEM ones in the wing mirror are useless so i added my own

-Nav/Phone holder
Again made my own with hard wired chargers

-ECU connectivity
I use a bluetooth connector on my cars OBD port allowing me to use the Android Torque app on my phone so i can pull details like boost, oil temp, vaccum, engine load etc to the phone and show them as dials - this si handy because just being able to see %of engine load allows me to swap gears so i can keep load light and fuel economy up

-In car computer

This was fitted for multi-media duties - the amount of time i am sat waiting for my Mrs to use the loo at services/finish work means that it has paid for itself having my entire movie collection at my fingers

Also it can access iPlayer when i turn the hotspot function on my mobile on

Like i said i like my toys
