An E39 M5 is a better Q car than this. Nearly everyone sees them as 'just another old 5 series' until you've gone by and they get a flash of the M and the quad pipes.
If anything I would say the 550i is the better Q car because of that 'run of the mill 5 series' look! It never gives the game away until you hit the loud pedal.

Also I guess as well it depends if you want a car for show or functionality. All I ever hear from BMW enthusiasts is that the later E60's are leagues ahead of the E39.

The old 'flash of the M and quad pipes' is utterly gross. Purely reserved for orange people wearing enormous gold watches and driving around in X5///M's.

I like that. Way over priced though.

21mpg is more like it too. Same engine was in my 650.

Comfort seats are exceptional.

I love the colour, though not sure I'd want those running costs from something that wasn't an M car.

There won't be any. They are bomb proof pretty much. My 650 cost me nothing other than servicing in 2.5 years.

I have an SE spec V8 manual as well - but mine's an E61 touring! Albeit a couple of year's older and with 50,000 rather than 40,000 miles, I got offered £6,500 as a p/ex against a 911 recently. So a). £20k is rather ambitious and b). I'd buy my car for £6,500 in a flash so needless to say I've still got it.

Manual isn't the greatest box ever (quite a long throw) but at the end of the day you are at least in complete control and its by no means obstructive. You'd be surprised how much you need to rev these things to get them really moving - an auto would be permaently lolloping around in the highest gear possible so would genuinely disguise the performance.

Oh and mine is de-badged of course.

Yes, that line made me chuckle too. I had spotted this car on Autotrader recently. You could always get it wrapped in a more bearable colour.

a sleeper car is a bit like being an ugly bloke but with a massive appendage ....its a bit of a waste.
Looks are subjective. A massive appendage will always be a massive appendage.

This sleeper will still have the firepower to very discreetly see off 80% off cars on UK roads in the real world.

That is the ultimate q-car.

Yes - the colour is not to everyone's tast, but, that's more of a reason to think it's a 525d before being smoked by it!

I don't doubt the reliability, but aren't these insurance group 20 and in the maximum road tax bracket?. That coupled with 21 average makes for high running costs for something that is non-M. I could understand it in a 6 series, but not a plain looking 5.

Lol, enjoyed this article.

Never did get the Sepang Bronze colour. The 550i is an animal to say the least.

Ouch! Does make the Individual one look very pricey. Any pics?

His is the older 545i whereas this is the twin turbo 550i. This is retail while his was more at trade money.

This one is a really nicely spec'd car but it will depreciate at a hell of a rate

a tad overpriced, and I couldn't live with a beige car, but that in a dark colour would be an infinitely cool waftmobile, with a turn of speed that would embarrass most things. 8/10 because it's beige :P
