RE: PH blog: crazy radios
Discussion
Lots of comments about the Citroen GS and CX, and I have owned examples of both: the radio position between the seats did not take much getting used to, the only potential danger of this arrangement was that the cassette aperture was a potentially open mouth waiting to swallow crunbs, crisp fragments and small coins....
What seems more surprising is that despite the wonderful ergonomics of the minor controls on the CX (lights, indicators, horns and headlamp flasher all fingertip-operated from the 2 pods without the need to take your hands off the steering wheel), while the early cars featured a radio that was mounted reasonably logically at the top of the central console, the later facelifted cars from 1985 put the radio back between the seats!
And while we are on the subject of ergonomics PLEASE can we see a return to the discipline demanded by NON-SELF-CANCELLING INDICATORS (with a clearly audible but not unpleasant tick),once a feature of all Citroens - once you've used them anything else is a step backwards...... yes, really!!

Mk1 Renault 5 I used to have put the radio vertically on the engine bulkhead.
Ah yes!!!! Thanks. I've been scratching my head as I knew I'd owned a car with a vertical mount radio and this was it. My old Renault 5 GTL.The Sashio radio would automatically reload the tape every time you ejected due to being vertical.
EOW 954W you nearly bankrupt me.

The amp. Maybe it's only on some MR2s (mine is a 1992, a very early Rev2).
If it rains on them with the passenger door open, water gets into it and shorts out various bits. As a result, mine was draining its battery and had to be fitted to a relay connected to the ignition circuit to make sure that when the engine was off, the stereo was too.
According to the electricians who fitted it, the system was updated on later models, but if the amp was well and truly fkered getting a replacement unit is near-impossible and fitting a new DIN head unit requires a complete rewiring of the original eight-speaker system.
Um...i think there are speakers in the B pillar, but not the amps...If it rains on them with the passenger door open, water gets into it and shorts out various bits. MR2s had a cool subwoofer mounted behind the seats, which was pretty advanced for 1994. For the time, the hi-fi available on japanese models was pretty advanced.
My 2002 Mitsubishi L200 had controls impossible to use with anything in the cupholders. Thanks to the design of them also, if you like your drinks in a can or a bottle they would slosh and spill all over the head unit, which often didn't work anyway. It also had the stupidest whip aerial ever which made people in multi-storey car parks think the car was splitting in half from the scraping noise on the ceiling and it was cassette/FM/AM. Even in 2002 they didn't see fit to provide a CD player in a model which wasn't the basic one, although the tasteful green/silver two-tone paintwork and all of 98 rattly and lethargic bhp was definitely some compensation.

I was looking at mid-engined Renault 5 Turbos the other day, and my eyes were drawn to a shot of the car’s cabin. And one specific aspect of that little cocoon of Bakelite and velour: the hi-fi.
Pic?????????Here is my turbo 2 which which looks exactly the same inside as every other Renault 5 we've been blessed with. Funny I never even questioned the radio position, in fact I don't even know if it works!
When God was a child, I had a 'poor man's Uracco' .. it's radio position wasn't one of its strong points..
Actually with rose-tinteds on, it wasn't a bad drive.. underpowered but due to its propensity to oxidation, probably a good thing as much more torque would have had the engine in the front seats...
Wasn't a bad looking thing the Bagheera.. just *very* badly screwed together..
(This one isn't mine - random pics off t'net for those too young to remember these innovative vehicles)

Another good one is the Morgan Aero 8:
My father had one and hated it. Admittedly he chose not to order steering wheel controls without realising the location of the head unit. At least, that's what he told me.
Holy fk! That's some proper hide-and-seek, I was thinking "meh the head unit isn't on the picture after half a minute of looking. My father had one and hated it.
