Actually, this wins!
This has to win, it actually took me five minutes of looking at these pictures wondering why someone had posted some pictures of an obscure Porsche before I even saw the radio, that is brilliant.

What about the Morris Ital with the radio angled away from the driver:

Well, it matched the whole design and engineering philosophy - which was angled away from the driver.

Some absolute belters in this thread. That Targa is my personal fave, but the Lambo must be the winner surely?

Never mind the radio, look at the position of those pedals in the Alfa! You'd need a left knee with a 45 degree angle to drive that.
The De Tomaso pic includes an example of the tortuous pedal positions the Italians so love too...

Not sure that Renault have even moved on from the the old 5 layout - have you been in a Wind/Twingo? I always found these amusing when aftermarket CD players always say something about not mounting at more than 45(ish?) degree angle...

Damn, got beaten to the Disco 1.

One thing, however, that strikes me about most of the cars in the opening blog, is that they were never designed with in-car radios in mind. Hence, any installation was naturally going to be an afterthought....

Apparently Land Rover offered Series 1 Station Wagons with "provision for an in-car Radio". Not sure where though...

having owned a number of alfas including a 75...my garanfather's espada's stereo position seemed adequate...at least that way you picked the tunes while he drove lol... also the julia chanel knocking gear action was frustrating but im sure i had the same trouble with a talbot once too...i thought the roof mounted stereo of teh esprit was too cool

Not as whacky as some of the others here, but Lotus took the Alfa 75 approach when fitting the head unit into the Excel. It's a totally useless position:

My First car was a Lancia Y10, It had a MASSIVE alacantara covered flap in front of the single DIN head unit. It was so big that when open you hit it with your knuckles when you changed into 1/3/5, and interestingly it had cup holders in it ideally suited to throw your beverage of choice all over your head unit.

I go so annoyed with hitting it every gear change, i hit it and it snapped off. Problem solved, ergonomics of car instantly improved. The car rotted away many years ago but i still have the flap somewhere as a memory!

Great thread!!

Its not that long ago that even a basic am push button radio (pre DIN) was something you saved up to put in your Mini; truly an afterthought, and the plethora of aftermarket mounting brackets ensured you could mount the thing in any number of occupant injury enhancing positions!! Plus the challenge of mouning the speakers and hiding the cable if you were flush enough to afford a 'stereo' version...

One detail point though...Bakerlite..in a Renault 5...er no that cabin was pure Polypropolene hell...

Ah, yes. My 1.7 SLX with the awkward radio, foot long gear stick and the left-hand drive wipers which missed the top corner of the screen. An ergonomic masterpiece. Not to mention seized trunnions.
Ps. the grille under the radio was the 10 watt single speaker.
