I think well modified sleeper cars are great as long as they are road legal and properly insured. I just don't think I should be paying for the extra risk unless its my car.

I've owned modified cars in the past (including an engine swap fiesta) and my elsie has some basic mods. All declared and properly insured at my expense not yours.
Great. And likewise, by the way.

So the issue isnt the car, its the capability of people to commit fraud?

There could be nothing wrong with the car at all but I'm sure any professional or hobbyist mechanic can fill in a form.

The Max Power days of "Still a £$&£$ on the log book" where you'd get XE20 Corsa's with standard brakes giving the Police something to issue Section 59 like confetti at a wedding are long gone (probably why this thread died) but there are still more than a few morons out there.

Be wary and as you agreed above if in doubt walk away.

I've done countless engine swaps, replacements and conversions in my time but every time I have made sure the DVLA are up to date.

What happens if you're pulled and found to be running a conversion? Can they take your car?

What if you bought a car and didn't know it had been converted?

If you didn't know it had been converted chances are you hadn't declared it to your insurers so they could take it away as your policy may not be valid. In theory.

It depends a lot on what you were pulled over for.

As a very high ranking judge once told me...

"Ignorance is no defense"

...so expect to get some kind of book thrown at you. judge

So much time, effort and money gone into an incredible looking car but for the sake of a stamp I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole wrapped in a Titan.

Interesting series of comments.

To my mind currently, unless heavily modded cars have been fully declared and properly registered for road use, then they are dead ducks, except possibly for private offload or possibly track use. The plethora of unregistered modified cars currently appearing week after week in all sorts of internet sites then failing to sell and reappearing time and again suggests to me that that particular game is up.

Since the DVLA changed the game a while ago, registering such cars economically, without full hstory and genuine receipts for the major components and a build history, is simply too difficult. Hence the constant repeated sales ads. It seems to me sensible never to buy such offerrings? Why look for trouble?

For the record "incredible" can be a positive and a negative.

For example...

"I think it's incredible Donald Trump is the 45th President of America".

hehe

You wait ages for one...

...and two come along at once.

Genuinely interested in a VR6 as a Winter hack, tidy in spring and sell to a "Dub Scene" mug in Summer for a small profit but for the sake of a stamp these two are scrap. rolleyes

For some months I have been developing an Ecoboost conversion for my old Fiesta track car to update the current - properly declared and registered - bigger capacity engine that I put in it years ago. This has included some fairly regular trawling of ebay at times and I struggle to think of the last time I didn't stumble over an incorrectly registered car. By way of example spotted this morning, here's what's in effect a Fiesta ST180 still registered as a 1.25 Zetec and openly advertised as "PERFECT FOR A YOUNG DRIVER AS IT IS CHEAP TO RUN, INSURE AND TAX":

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2014-FORD-FIESTA-ZETEC-F...

For reference, Fiesta 1.25 Zetec is insurance group 7 whilst Fiesta ST is a rather headier group 30.

Surely that has to be a ringer?

I cant imagine anyone actually thinks that is a good idea, it isnt a sneaky remap or some slightly different alloys, its a completely different, much faster model.

Cad D and converted, hmmm, smells a bit dodgy but for the brave who can check it over and sort the paperwork, might be a cheap way of getting what is pretty much 99.99 percent a Fiesta ST, though loads of Actual Cat D ST's out there for similar money which maybe simpler.

Downright dangerous as well as downright stupid. Getting such an extensively modded vehicle through the requirements of regstration is not all easy. That is why so many of these vehicles go around and around on the auction sites. I do think that more and more genuine enthusiasts are becoming aware of the pitfalls. I regularly see dire warnings attached to unregistered kit car adverts. Clearly this must be to the good.

Indeed it is, it was mentioned in a different thread that it's a stolen ST running on the plates of a cat d fiesta.

What's the issue with an all wheel drive turbo'd vr6 Golf? MK2 golfs were available from factory with 4wd, the VR6 fits nicely in the engine bay, a turbo well that makes it perfect.

I'm not disputing the registration aspect but the build is good.

So are we against cars that have the incorrect details on the log book for the revised engine size, or just if its being sold?

I've just spotted a car thats fitted with a much larger engine than is registered on the log book (and for the model of car). It is insured under ASKMID, so could it be insured with the bigger engine but still have the wrong engine size on the log book?

All I'm trying to achieve here is helping to make sure no Pistonhead buys a car with a stolen engine or worse and ends up losing everything.
My mate bought an E36 325 Touring that had a full 3.2 M3 Evo conversion. That was undeclared when he bought it so trying to do the right thing he updated the capacity and engine number when he sent to log book off.

A week later he was arrested for receiving stolen goods and theft of a motor vehicle. The M3 bits were from a nicked car.

He lost the car, all the money he paid for it and nearly ended up with a criminal record.

DVLA issues aside if the engine conversion is undeclared you never know what they are trying to hide.
