RE: You Know You Want To: Mercedes E55 AMG (W210)
Discussion
Looking at old mercs can get incredibly tempting. Not an AMG, but bump the budget slightly for a V12 option...

I can't help but feel an AMG would be good company for the Elise!

100BHP per £1000? Got me thinking... lets see some good value bang per buck motors!
Nissan 300 ZX Twin Turbo £2500 will get u one!
Mitsi 300GTO twin turbo I have seen ones for as little as £2000
Subaru Impreza, plenty of cheap ones about seen one with 350bhp (allegedly) for £2000
so looks like best value is Jap cars!
can anyone find the most powerful car for sale for under £4000? No rules other than must be road legal MOT tax etc, but other than that anything goes..

Ruling out tuned cars, the most powerful stock car in the PH classifieds at the moment for under £4k is I think this...http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...
I own one as well.
Our previous E240 estate was riddled with rust, so it was sold for a pittance.
The 2000 model-year E55 that replaced it was the third one I agreed to buy. The first facelift was advertised as 'immaculate' but an independant inspection proved otherwise. The second really was rustier than anyone could imagine, but available for a few thousand and I took pity on it and thought I could get it sorted, but fate intervened.
The very next day I spied another 'immaculate' E55 estate in these very pages and it was only 11 miles away. The end result is a 63,000 mile black E55 estate with absolutely no rust whatsoever and almost as-new. So I paid a premium for it. £8,000. But there was nothing else condition-wise like it around in 18 months of looking.
So, running costs? One year's worth of driving (around 6,000 miles as we have other cars) and it's not needed a thing. But on time alone she's due a service. We do have a friendly ex-Merc chap who keeps labour costs down and only uses genuine parts.
Yes, the instrument pixels are shot, but there's good specialist support to sort those. Tyres? 4 brand-new P-Zero boots were £725 fitted earlier this year. Compare that to £1,300 for Michelin Diamari's on my Range Rover and they seem quite affordable.
Fuel economy? Well, it can get low if driven with enthusiasm. But a long motorway jaunt often sees 27+mpg and 18-ish if you pootle it to work, but it remains the most economical car we own.
Residuals? Not bothered in the slightest. This is a keeper.
And the Q-car thing? BMW (mainly 3-Series), Audi and Golf drivers all (seemingly) don't know what this is and bait it regularly. More often than not (when conditions allow) they get taught a lesson.

Holy balls, they've come down since I last looked! And call me mental, but I love that colour combo. http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...

Simes110: That's an interesting read - thanks! *scurries off to the classifieds* !
Yep, the CL600 are far cheaper to buy than the CL500. They have to be good ones or repair bills will KILL you, quickly!

only thing is with a 5 litre car costing £4k you could put more than the asking price in fuel in a year so the maths dont add up. if you can afford £100 a week in fuel would you be looking at buying a newer more expensive car.
At average mileage I'd bet it would be more than £100 a week...TNH said:

It's pretty conservative actually. Assuming 12k miles a year, £1.40 a litre, 20mpg average, that's £73 a week. As illustrated by other posts on this thread, these cars are often run as part of a fleet and don't do many miles.

Whats the 0-60 on these and the top speed? I remember a work colleague had a burgundy one some years ago.
I think the 0-60 is around 5.5 secs, ltd to 155mph although my rev limiter seemed to kick in at an indicated 165mph I heard they were good for around 175 ish if de restricted,I reckon mine had a fair bit left in it the speed it used to get there in so it seems believeable.
Nice pic. Dr Interceptor.
A couple of the CLK ones at <£4K have caught my eye on a bangs per buck basis. Shame about the decline in Merc. standards around that time and the rust but I saw a W124 rusting out from under the paint on a bottlid once.
X300s appeal too, but a bit too big for the lanes I tend to use. Perhaps I am wrong but the CLK appears smaller for those situations when you meet oncoming traffic in a lane and have reverse back to the nearest passing place.

I can't fully describe how much more I want the E500 (tho I'd rather have a 500E for sheer kudos value and I suspect there's something badly wrong with that one anyway) than any W210 or later E - other than by placing those things on opposite ends of a very, very, very long line...
Even in Silver - because the original owner specced the interior to contrast with it to perfection - tho I'd take a black one ideally. The front wheelarches alone should be in a gallery...
I blame Droughty...

I've got to reiterate what others have said - not every car is for driving to the end of the earth and back - you cannot even begin to understand man maths with your mindset either I've driven my fair share of these ( 2 of which had over 100K on them) and rust issues aside they are a decent car. Very much a point and squirt experience with plenty of comfort thrown in.
The engine really is the highlight though. Robust, smooth and more than enough performance. They do like a drink though, I remember getting through over 50 litres in a spirited 100 mile trip, tyre wear is comical as well.
I believe Mercedes effectively washed their hands of the body warranty on these a few years back which was a shame considering the pedigree of the car.
