Is the rust on this era Mercedes purely cosmetic - or are there any structural issues?
Thanks
Mike
AFAIK purely "cosmetic" with body panels suffering from tin worm. Anything structural and it's probably had dodgy repair work after a prang. Thanks

Apart from rust, not that many major issues with them.
I was offered one earlier this year for £1500 - it had minimal rust.
Long MOT & Tax, good history, the new owner had purchased an RS$, and wanted a quick sale.
Unfortunatley, someone else got there before me! That was a lot of car for the cash.

I got rid of a W140 S500, the electronics risk was too high, kept a W126 500 sel as it much more simplistic/agricultural/reliable as you wish. Enjoyed C43 for a while but found it too small for the power but it was probably me not settling to the car, it was rusting though.
Have had a E39 540iA Touring for a couple of years, very good, very reliable and cost effective means of carrying on old used car ownership.
Favourite is the RS2 - galvanised like the BMW and not a problem vehicle over 8 years.
Any old car from an expensive model range is a huge risk, thats why they are cheap.
I will not buy modern, tin boxes when superb old cars are around.
The main thing on those W140s in terms of electronics are the wiring loom. Apart from that, they are pretty much robust.Have had a E39 540iA Touring for a couple of years, very good, very reliable and cost effective means of carrying on old used car ownership.

I'va had a Series 1 400 SEL, and currently got a Series 2 S500 L and a 600 SEL.
Solid motors, and definitely last of the proper Benzes. My all-time favourite Merc, apart from the original 600 models!

Yep, the CL600 are far cheaper to buy than the CL500. They have to be good ones or repair bills will KILL you, quickly!
I could have bought a 2001 W221 S600L for just over £2k, which had an 'oil leak'.After a little research and speaking to my Mercedes indy, he informed me it's a common issue on those V12s, and the oil leak occurs at the back of the engine. The part is not necessarily expensive, but with the labour, can be over £2k to rectify!
Needless to say, I walked away..

I went for one of these earlier this year. So far nothing mechanically has gone wrong at all. I've replaced the front wings and put it through a full respray. Looks great, been derestricted and has a programmeable remap thingy for sheer lunacy. Plus its metallic violet. What can possibly go wrong?
OK so the alloys need a refurb but all this power and madness for less than £3.5k isn't bad at all.
Its a keeper.

Recognise your car I think...has it got a lowering module fitted? OK so the alloys need a refurb but all this power and madness for less than £3.5k isn't bad at all.

I remember a period magazine test (Top Gear if memory serves) that pitted this E55 against its contemporaries the XJR and A8 in appalling Scottish weather. I remember period me wanting all 3 but lusting after the E55 the most. A very cool car.
Still have that top gear magazine. AMG won the test. It was 1998. But within 12 months all three were blown away, the new E39 M5 had arrived.I've had a few w124's - w123's. They have all rusted pretty badly truth be told. The 210 I have at the moment has a few bits and bobs of corrosion on it but very little in comparison. It's been a lot more reliable (faultless so far - touch wood) than any Merc I've yet had and is a much nicer car to drive than the last w124 I had, it really is. Highly underrated it would seem. 2001 E240 Avantgarde estate, green, black leather, all electrics - 90,000 and a one owner/FSH car. Years MOT through my (specialist) mechanic - £1750 it cost me and I'll get a fair few years out of it I think. The W124's were great but at the money they command now I'm just not having it. They are no longer worth what they cost to buy and (honestly) run. Also, and this is an odd one - now that I own a w120 the looks have really grown on me, on the lower suspension I think they look rather cool... MB do have a bit of form with this.

Sorry to drone on about this... but they don't all rust.
In the foreground is our E430 Estate, in Gold, with the big AMG wheels. Owned by the family since it was 18 months old, now with 148k on the clock. No rust.
Granted some did, but not all of them.
It is a fantastic car - ours might not be the 55 AMG, or even the 500, but even the 430 engine delivers entertaining performance, and is surprising economical on a good run
I've read that it all depends on where they were built; is that right? In the foreground is our E430 Estate, in Gold, with the big AMG wheels. Owned by the family since it was 18 months old, now with 148k on the clock. No rust.

If so, where was your one built?
I love this shape E-Class but there are so many rusty ones around that I have not bothered contemplate a purchase
If they had good bodies, it would be the one car I'd uncharacteristically (for me) want to keep forever.

Ours is certainly a keeper - well we've had it for over eight years already. It's perfect for us, takes the three greyhounds in the back, is just as happily pootling round town as it is wafting up and down the motorway.
