Wasn't it Cathy Gale (Honor Blackman) that wore the leather? Watching the re-runs when all the digital channels were created, I preferred the Tara King character myself.
They both did - certainly Emma Peel did. The name came from some production notes when the series was being thought about; the character had to have "M. Appeal", abbreviation for man appeal...
Emma Peel my second favourite - I did prefer her to Tara King as she was much more "hands on" in the fight scenes. Tara King was the champagne bottle over the head kind of girl rather than a Hong Kong Phooey chop.
Purdey my fave, but the British Leyland cars of the New Avengers series not as good as the powder blue Elan.

As a young lad Emma Peel was the sexiest woman alive at that time. Especially when she wore a leather one piece suit. oh yes.

Me too. She was so gorgeous it makes me want to weep. Élan was perfect match for her I reckon.
me too, my first 'proper' gf looked just like her

How to celebrate half a century of the Lotus Elan? Let's remember Ron today. Because today, 21 October 2012 if Ron Hickman were alive, he would have turned 80. R.I.P. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_Hickman)

Have been given Avengers boxed set and am working way through it. Starting with the Emma Peel era of course. Bonkers plots , surreal twists and pace so slow compared to anything more modern. But exquisitely stylish too- and a lot of sexual nuance in conversations between Steed and Peel I missed when I was 15 becase all I could think about was the leather cat suit and the Elan.... The latter is the best looking small sports car ever made and can hold its head up with even full size ones for looks. So much nicer than the oh so obvious E Type .

Not as good to drive as the Elan, though.

Great piece of work Dan, putting this together. Emma and the Lotus evoke many childhood memories! Diana Rigg was the best Avenger.

I bought my first Elan (S4 Sprint) at the tender age of 19 and had a bit of an accident in it......

Once you had an Elan the memories stay with you as theu are such usable and complete packages. 30 years on I still have an 67 S3 SE coupe in cirrus white, in my view the best car before they spoilt the design with the strange rear arches and bigger rear lights.

Here's a debate now, best Elan? S1, S2, S3, S4, Sprint?

Sprint DHC for me. The big-valve engine is a gem. The earlier cars look better, though, in lots of little ways.
