The 309 GTI had lighter steering and better chassis response due to the better weight distribution.
You have to remember that the 309 was a power assisted system though whereas most 205s were usually un-assisted ( although you could spec PAS ).Was the powered rack a slightly faster ratio as well? ISTR the 309 having less turns than a 205 although I'm not sure if there were arch constraints on the 309
I had a 1.6 and CTi and a 1.9 all from new and the 1.9 was the daddy of them all.
The 1.9 died with a seized engine after about 250,000 miles and about 10 years. That was probably down to me having skimped on servicing for a few years when I was short of cash, but it owed me nothing was still fun to drive.
The 1.9 was a much hardcore car than the 1.6 despite there only appearing to be minor differences and the CTi was a floppy thing that nearly threw me off the road the first time I tried to go through a corner at the same speed I had in the 1.6.
The power of the 1.9 was instantaneous and I remember swapping with a friend with a Renault 5 Turbo at the time and he really wanted to keep my car while I so wanted mine back.
Comparisons with the 309 are obvious but they're completely different cars with the 309 being less chuckable and just less involving but then I'm biased.
I keep looking at the classifieds every now and again and I just now I have to have one once again, I hope it's as good as I remember!

Nothing to do with the PAS. I've had both. It does make things easier though and as PAS goes it still gave good feedback through the steering. Was the powered rack a slightly faster ratio as well? God dammit.
You're determined to make me buy a 205, aren't you PH people?!!?
I even met Nick and his utterly brilliant car at the recent WaxStock show, that didn't do me any favours either.
Stop tempting me with glorious 205 discussions. I've got a house to buy!!!

Great cars - I had two when I was younger!Looking at that particular car, and judging from the drivers seat, it appears they have witnessed the lift the off oversteer these cars are famous for...

As you say though, it was a good system on the 309
