1999 BM 740, 190k and still drove tight as the day I got it. Never used a drop of oil in the engine, but needed a new seal in the gearbox and an ABS speed sensor together with 4 new tires, which made it beyond economic repair. It went to the breakers without a single squeak or rattle.
That makes me sad Papa Hotel said:

Not shopped, but real!!!
Oi!Start a 200,000 mile club. This thread isn't for show-offs like you.
Sadly it never made it to 250k, as significant aircon fault meant the car was uneconomic to repair (Saab 9-5), it's replacement a Saab 9-3 was going great guns until it got written off in a accident (it was parked at the time) at a mere 122k miles http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... On another Swedish Car (Volvo) at the moment but only just run this one in at 6.5k miles!!!

What a shocking waste. The engine if nothing else is worth several times scrap value..Anyway, here's mine:
1999 BMW 328i, just after doing 450 miles on one tank, in luxury too. Great car and will keep going long after I've finished with her!

Many problems with modern engines come from neglecting belt changes and not checking oil levels.
Some of the ultra-thin oils used these days burn off much quicker than the old 10w40 we'd chuck at everything in the 80 and 90s, so it's not uncommon to get bottom end problems from oil starvation.
Extended belt change intervals haven't helped - a lot of manufacturers have been rather optimistic with the mileage they can run to - plus owners of 10 year old / 80k mile old cars worth a grand tend to look at a 400 quid belt change service and decide not to do it.

Now over 115k. Still on it's first cambelt (I believe the change is looming at 125k if I don't bail before then, which I've been saying I'll do for 2-3 years now) and never put any oil in it. The only oil it sees it at service time.
However, the bodywork & front suspension are getting a little weary now and probably need a more expensive pick me up than I'm prepared to offer. Drivetrain will be good for as much again.
Generally though I'd agree.
I drive a 54 plate disco3 tdv6, it's sitting at 99,789 miles.
I'm quite looking forward to seeing it pass the 100k mark.
Already had belts and pumps done, about to do the gearbox and diff oil's soon so they should be fine.
Genuine LR service kit is £80 off ebay from a dealer, oil is £70 for the proper castrol 5w30.
I can do a full service every year for £150. Should keep the engine sweet for a while.
