Well it wouldn't be PH without someone suggesting one.

Drove wonderfully, had lost a few BHP, but still happy to run round to the redline. If they had decent rust protection they'd be unburstable.

With frequent oil changes and mechanical sympathy 100k isn't too much on a well designed modern engine.

The highest I've come across is a 530d with something like 600,000 miles on it. So far it's needed a new turbocharger and that's it. Impressive!

I worked with an engineer who had that Passat (from your profile) for his daily. Bar a couple of sensors it's on 400k miles with no new parts needed, even the clutch and exhaust are original.

Many problems with modern engines come from neglecting belt changes and not checking oil levels.

Some of the ultra-thin oils used these days burn off much quicker than the old 10w40 we'd chuck at everything in the 80 and 90s, so it's not uncommon to get bottom end problems from oil starvation.

Extended belt change intervals haven't helped - a lot of manufacturers have been rather optimistic with the mileage they can run to - plus owners of 10 year old / 80k mile old cars worth a grand tend to look at a 400 quid belt change service and decide not to do it.

2006 V70 D5 is at a shade under 92,000 now, and we'll be driving back from Croatia in a week, and doing the same trip in the new year

Won't quite hit it but we won't be far off

Might celebrate by getting it chipped...
Don't.

600k with nothing but routine standard services... Plus one turbo is very good going. He certainly got value out of that

I wonder if car makers will stop increasing durability else they will sell fewer as people and companies run them for much longer.

You're likely to need a clutch and DMF fairly soon. I did when I had one.

Mondeo now on 123,500. Got it on 95,000. Hated it at first but have grown fond of it, the oil has always been golden when drained each year. Only issue is the clutch is on it's way out and I'm wondering whether it's worth spending £700 on a new clutch and DMF as it's grinding a bit now. Worth it? Mk3 2.0 Duratec.

Cars go on forever nowadays as long as the engine is correctly serviced

All depends on type of driving/ how it's driven surely?

My Passat is on its original clutch at 135000 miles with no sign of any problems.

I think this is a very valid point.
A chipped car is under more stress it will not last as long as a standard version. From what I hear BMW (and others) dial in a large margin of tolerance.

185bhp/400Nm --> 220bhp/525Nm sounds like a nice upgrade

ETA: Not read of any reliability issues amongst the Volvo owners forums...
