My trusty Mazda Premacy is just about to tip over 156500 miles.

Yes I just admitted to driving to driving a Mazda Premacy and yes I'm pretty sure it's the first (and presumably the last) time ones been mentioned on this forum.
Welcome to PH, I'll admit I had to google your car.

So after the debacle that is currently the expensive vs cheap oil thread

Do people put decent oil in, regularly, to achieve their healthy 100k+ cars?

Open Pandora's box, why don't you?

If you're looking to spend money on oil, spend it on increasing the frequency of changes rather than on fancier oil.

I'd say changing the oil and filter more frequently using a decent oil is far better for the car than buying really fancy and expensive oil. I change the oil in my 190 every 3,000miles and in my 124 every 6,000miles. I use Triple QX 10W 40 semi synthetic which is available from Euro Car Parts in 20L containers for £28. It is Shell Helix in a different bottle. It is pointless using anything fancier. Do it yourself and it only takes 15 minutes.

For what it's worth I've use whatever 10W 40 oil is available, admittedly not usually supermarket budget brand. I'd imagine ensuring that the oil is kept at a good level and servicing it regularly most probably make far more of a difference than what oil you put in.

Whats going to kill my car and the reason it wont reach much past 160k isn't engine wear - it's rust and corrosion. Maybe i should have been worrying less about regular service intervals and more about rustproofing the underside of the car instead!

My Saab 9-3 is up to 194k miles, with oil changed every 20-30k with whatever cheap stuff is about.

Have a read through these pages and see how many people ask for help about worn bug ends or camshafts

It's not the hardened parts that need the love, my 9-5 just went in for major surgery, despite 12k/12month changes it's entire life the rings were shot and the bottom end bearings were shedding layers of metal.

Gunked sump? Common.

Nope updated PCV kit when it was available, and this car did it's entire life from year 3 to 15 on a motorway commute, I've got a one dealer service file an inch thick.
To be fair the issue wasn't apparent at all until we pulled it apart; there was smoke on start up and I sent it in for valve stem seals, when taking the head off we snapped one of the cam chain guides which fell into the sump, necessitating a bottom end inspection. If it wasn't for that we'd never have spotted the wear on the bearings and as it was all apart I asked for the rings to be done.

Volvo, S80 or V70, with the D5 engine? They can do silly miles if cared for. Actually, I've seen them do silly miles even when horribly abused, as long as they got regular servicing!

Not only is your E91 almost twice as powerful as mine, you get more MPG than me. Something must be up with my 320D. Impressive figures from a 330D.
You say that today I had a loan car 420d 65 reg auto drove the exact same route to work (Eco pro there comfort way back). Didn't thrash it instead deliberately drive exactly the same style I drive my 535d.

No traffic at all.
Achieved ..... 45mpg there in Eco pro and 48 mpg on the way back comfort. Now my F10 535d will get 42mpg there and 44/45mpg on the way back.
How just how inefficient are those tiddly engines. I have what 150+ bhp more weight and no Eco pro or stop start.

Just goes to show how good the big Diesels are v small. Plus when I spank mine it's actually amusingly quick the 420d is never quick. It's also a much nicer sounding unit in fact revving out the I6 under load gives a nice sound the I4 never has a nice sound.

But a 428i/435i - actually don't buy a 4 series the interior quality is shocking v a 5 series.

I love a nice under wheeled Scandinavian barge. I do like the face lifted 9-3s. May well be my next daily.

The fanatics who fuss about oil do about 5000 miles a year and change cars every three years, these are also the type that won't let the dealer clean their brand new car prior to delivery and make a fuss about the oem tyres.

Most of us 100,000+ owners just stick the cheapest oil in, oil is oil I'm sure Asda don't have their own refinery so surely it's produced by one of the major suppliers. I just change it once a year and use a genuine oil filter.
