Used to buy all sub 60k.. then had a run of 4 cars all over 100k (118, 174k, 182k, 103k) from purchase. Last car only had 90k and gave me nothing but bother. Back to 133k with the latest smile

600k with nothing but routine standard services... Plus one turbo is very good going. He certainly got value out of that

I wonder if car makers will stop increasing durability else they will sell fewer as people and companies run them for much longer.
I find that very very hard to believe. There are things on the 530d (i assume its an e39) that no amount of regular servicing will prevent going wrong. You can prevent them, to an extent, but its far beyond regular servicing.

The vacuum hoses condition are age dependant, they will degrade. You can change your oil every day but it won't stop the rubber hoses disintegrating.

The inlet manifold will clog up.

The vanes in the turbo will get sticky.

The oil breather will get clogged.

The FSU for the heating will give up.

The intercooler will have oil in it.

As well as many more issues the e39 530d's suffer from.

As I said, all those issues are preventable but its far more then regular servicing that prevents them.

I think some people just like to make out their car is more reliable than it really is.

This is coming from someone who has nursed a e39 530d past 200k. I have put well over 100 hours of my own labour into it this year. 600k trouble free miles, I wish.

Neighbours 1994 1.0 Micra not far short of 400K. He's had it from new. Never had any serious issues with it.

I can beat that with my rally car 205 on somewhere beyond 168000 though it's now in need of it's third engine.

My 1.9 road going 205 is on 135000 on it's original engine albeit slightly smoky.

Long way to go with my road going 1.6 - 77000 and indoors till March.

My Mercedes is on 122k and is just nicely run in. My Landcruiser has 147k on the clock but I'm fairly sure this is a work of fiction and they will have been hard miles (off road and towing heavy loads). There are things that need doing like CV joints etc but there is no reason it shouldn't do another 200k without problem.

Sold my Audi A4 2.6 in April this year with 356000 miles - I had owned it for eight years and it was still running sweetly. Original clutch too.

The A4 was replaced by an A6 2.7 biturbo that is now nearing 220000 miles - it's a 2002 model. I did a quick calc which confirmed that it's used over £50000 of petrol in its life to date (at today's prices).....laughhehe

Last 3 cars I've bought have had over 100k on them,

Rover 620 turbo 120k
MR2 Turbo 110k
Civic 1.5 110k

Broke the rover clutch but only because I wound the boost up.

Must be a good feeling taking a car from new up to 250k+

My V70 T5 has just tripped 172,000 and is just starting to feel its age (10 years). We went to Norfolk for the weekend recently and it feels a bit down on power and the front suspension is feeling a bit slack.

I have replaced the clutch (and rear main oil seal as a precaution), four dampers, front wishbone bushes, ball joints, wheel bearings, rear discs, battery and alternator over the past four years.

It has virtually stopped depreciating now, but would be worthless as a trade in, so I intend to keep it.

When I mentioned it at the office one of the girls said she changes her car always at 30k... She did seem genuinely concerned about my milage and safety

Though a few weeks ago she had a ride in my car as commented at how nice it was - I didn't state milage nor did I remind her today but goes to show some mentality around cars

Should also add that my 05 Accord diesel is on 114390 and needs more work done on it than any of the 205s (suspension bushes, exhaust manifold, turbo soon, bent bottom arm, clutch release bearing...)

1999 BM 740, 190k and still drove tight as the day I got it. Never used a drop of oil in the engine, but needed a new seal in the gearbox and an ABS speed sensor together with 4 new tires, which made it beyond economic repair. It went to the breakers without a single squeak or rattle.

to be fair, my motor bike will do 300km on a tank full.

Anyway, My '98 Civic has done 112,800 event free miles. Mechanically it is A1 and runs as well as it has ever done, it feels like it would run for ever, but is starting to develop the odd age related ailment.

That's a late 80's - early 90's Audi. 5 cylinder turbo of some description. S2, S4, S6, RS2 etc. Maybe a 90 Sport Quattro either.

Our 03 plate Type R has now reached 150000 miles.

Such a shame people bang on about mileages for a car when it comes to purchasing.
