Having owned an Elise, I would honestly say the R26.R is the quicker car. Admittedly the 0-60 times don't reflect this, but on the road and track it is (IMHO).
Oh I'm sure it is - lots of hot hatches are and as I said it's got a higher power to weight ratio. Ultimately pace is not on of my priorities though; traction, to an extent, is. Mostly though, I crave control purity and feel; and no FWD or 4WD car can really give that.

Of course most RWD cars don't do it very well, either.

How much!!!?!? £15k for a 2nd hand FWD Renault?

I'd rather buy a Clio Cup for £3k, or spend £15k on an Elise/Caterham!
I was just thinking how much better value this seemed than a Caterham!

Ugly as hell though it is, it's got to be fun!

Indeed it is a beast of a car and nice to see it holding onto its value well too.

Perhaps one of the most focused hatches ever made. It has a similar ethos to the GT3 RS, fast 'usable' car that can really excel round a circuit.

WIll surely be remembered for sometime yet.

Top marks!

Only 200 bhp from a 2.0t? Presumably you can tweak that to the usual 300-400 and have a proper weapon?

I thought it was more like 240?

Absolute fantastic car. I'd have one in a heartbeat if it wasn't for needing to stick Jnr and his car seat in the passenger bucket.

If you've not been in one, make sure it has the ti exhuast, the sound echoing round the almost empty shell is worth the price alone.

Price? Well they don't really depreciate so cost of ownership is relatively small if you can afford the inital outlay.

2nd best Renaultsport made after the Clio V6 - no bias honestly

I loved the idea of the R26.R when it was launched and having recently sold my Clio V6 225 at the time I went to my local Renault dealer which had two of the sticky little devils as "ex-demos" (i.e. no miles, big discount) in white and grey. As a fun fast road/track day car it certainly tickled my fancy until I opened the door and dropped into (well onto) the seat. Man alive they are the narrowest seats ever fitted to a road car! Now, I admit that I am a Ray Mears/Ate all the pies build but i can fit in most sensible cars and quite a few that aren't (Had two VX220s and driven numerous supercars) . So, be warned if you're edging out of the Superdry jeans waist measurements, this is not the car for you. I had serious want, which has never quite abated, but those seats and my backside had a failure to agree that meant I never even got to drive it.

I can respect its abilities, but I do think its a little bit pointless - an expensive impractical hot hatch.

If you really want a RS Megane for the track, I reckon a better car could be made for cheaper:

RS Megane 225 £3500
Coilovers £1000 (with a decent fast road/track alignment)
Quaife ATB fitted £1000
Remap to 260bhp £500
Big brake upgrade £1000
4x R888 tyres fitted £800
Pull out rear seats £free

£7800 and you have a decent enough megane for track (if you really want a Megane for the track).

PH, come opn you must have the stats,

Demand has gone up you say but prices have tanked in the last 3 months.

With the more capabale and faster Rs250's starting at £12k expect them to plummet even more.

Doubt it. Demand v supply will keep the prices around the same for a while. Then the inevitable situation of having high milers which are a bit rough v mint examples which is where the prices will start to vary.

Example within Renaultsport - Clio Trophy. You can pick up a rough one for about £3500 but a mint one might cost up to £9k (think that's what the last expensive one was)

This is simply one of those cars that if you question its point, its not the car for you.

M3 vs CSL. A 2003 version of the former is £8k, the latter £30k.

The R26R is the CSL of the Megane range. Nobody bought it new, but 2nd hand they are in demand.

I love hot hatches, & think this is the ultimate, the FRP is a simply a Volvo hatchback with lots of power to overcome its weight problem. The R26R is a car that Renault built as a halo model to the RenaultSport brand - go to any RSport trackday and you will see 50 caged/harnesses clio's & Meganes, this was simply the factory version, & i applaud them for it.

A normal R26 doesnt appeal in the slightest, but the R26R does, purely for its bonkers, daftness.

Like many guys on here I have been lucky to drive and own lot's of desirable cars.

I currently own an E92 M3 and an R26.R. When my M3 was stolen from my drive I set off after the guys in he R26.R. I had no doubt that the Renault would have no trouble staying with them!

I liken a good drive in the Renault to catching a really good wave. It is amazing. Grip, handling, poise, pace and accuracy.

It's not even worth responding to the rear seat criticism.

The other prominent complaint regarding cost - well if cost is so important to you think about the lack of depreciation. That makes it really cheap as an overall ownership proposition. A little like the M3 CSL.
I think you are correct in the CSL analogy and these appeal in the exact same way to me, despite being FWD

As for the lack of rear seats, it may be judged an impracticality by some, but it's all part of the car's package for me. If you want practicality, buy something else (which I suppose is what many did! biggrin)

Has anyone ever driven one of these and a Mini GP? How do they compare? Don't remember any magazine road tests featuring both, but then there were a few years inbetween production dates

If you're going to use it as intended and really want a cage better to stick two fingers up at originality and go aftermarket. If you want one to collect and covet ... well ... you're probably missing the point.
I think this sums up the probelm with the R26.R, they are in my opinion great cars, but are not the kind of car that should be left in a collection, they deserve to be used. Problem is if you are just going to use it then why start with an R26.R why not just build your own. You could cage and lighten an R26 sort all the geometry etc. for less than the current price of an R26.R. If you are planning on using it as intended it doesn't matter that its not the collectable R26.R.

All that said I'm still glad renault mad this car and I hope they do make something equally special when they have to clear the 200 stock! If the new clio turns out as bad as everyone fears that really will be an amazing investment. I might even consider buying one from new...

Yes, you can strip an R26 and make it faster........but it'll never be an R!

You can strip a lot of cheaper better handling cars, and stick on generic exhausts or whizzbang remaps, but that's not the point here.

The point is Renault dare(d) to make silly cars. Not many other Marques would do that........

Exactly...

A drivers car can only have a N/A engine, and rear wheel drive... and can't be based upon a common hatchback... and must have the right badge on the bonnet...
