As good as this car is, for me the inherently nose-lead handling and high polar moment of inertia brought on by having the engine slung out over the front axle will always be a down-side when compared to a sports car, not to mention the lack of traction.
I have just bought an R26. It has less front end push on understeer than any Porsche 944/968 including my race car and yet no journo ever criticised those cars in those terms. The only criticism I have for the car is that the steering is a little numb and to civilised BTA I am used to cars that don't even have PAS, compared to pretty much anything these days its good enough to do the job. Seriously you should drive one they are shockingly good and so out of place compared to normal French hatchbacks of this era. I can't believe I am going to say this but Renaultsport managed to get closer to the Porsche DNA with these cars then any other German manufacturer has managed with their cars I really do feel the R26 is that good..... (just ignore the horrid grey dash)
