RE: You Know You Want To: Maserati Merak
Discussion
I love this and the V8 Bora. Stunning design. The modern Maseratis just don't even come close to the defining style these had.
The Citroen hydraulics would put me off though and I suspect a Citroen SM MIGHT be a bit cheaper and as a bit of a childhood icon, I can't help liking those too.

The Top Gear ape trio ruined these cars.
+1Its only a silly TV programme
Shakes head amd walks away slowly sadder that some people cant wait to blame strangers for their own failing
Sadder still the closest i'll get to a Merak in the near future is a De Rosa in 1 off paint job that taunts me from a LBS
This was The Car that got me interested in cars.... I was about 6, maybe 7, in Italy. We had just driven there in my Dads 2.8 Injection Granada. Staying in the same hotel was a play boy, Berlusconi type, had a red one in the car park, took me for a drive in this and I remember being absolutely smitten with the word Maserati. Dont remeber what the car was like but that name.....mmmmmmmmmm
Merak is nice but if you are going to go bankrupt buying a Maserati this is the way to do it IMO - Khamsin (yes I know it's a lot more than the Merak but it's a quarter of the price of a Ferrari Daytona!).

Chris,
Congratulations on a first class YKYWT!
If you're a sucker for Italian machinery - especially the slightly mechanically/electrically dubious 70s incarnations (like myself) then this has to be real tug on the heart steadfastly ignoring the screams from your wallet being sucked into a financial black hole.
If I had £25k to spend right now - the answer is yes!
Having blown that much a few times over on an Italian moneypit I guess I still haven't learned my lesson...

Khamsin is nice but if we are looking at the Merak + bankruptcy then why don`t we go for a Bora!http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C330141

Its pretty but £25k would see you in a 3200GT with enough money saved to replace the car completley should it go wrong.
I'd have thishttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3200-GTA-50-000m-reg-Jun...
Couldnt go wrong at that price! (the price did go up a bit as it was unsold at the end of the last auction.)
One of the cars that I've lusted after since seeing one as a kid. If I was in charge of the world all cars would have buttresses as part of back end design ... but the flying ones on the Merak are my favourite styling flourish.
Used to regularly walk past one for sale in Norwich many years ago - was 8K at the time (1988 I think) and it stayed on the forecourt for a very long time.

Funny you should say that - a friend of mine bought a Khamsin a few years ago, a beautiful pale blue one with very good bodywork - but - the hydraulics were a nightmare and in the end cost him as much as the purchase price of the car to fix! he then ran it for a few weeks before it caused more wallet pain and he passed it on... Shame 'cos it was a stunning car (it spent 6 weeks in my drive before being reapired so I really got to appreciate the looks! LOL)http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C330141
For me, I'd LOVE a Lambo Uracco, but I don't have the b***s for it!
