Interesting to hear all the comments, some of which are negative.
I don't know much about these but have just been out in one in the dark rainy conditions that tonight has brought - a colleague of mine has just bought one.
I was astounded by it - it gripped like a limpet whereas every RWD car would have been wheel spinning, it was fast throughout the rev range and sounded fantastic whilst still being refined. It looked really special thanks to the bodykit, dual exhausts and nice alloys
given a few years ago people on a budget would have bought an escort cosworth, sierra cosworth, z3 m coupe, integrale, older 911 etc these have all moved up towards the £30k plus range and so the next logical 'set' of cars to increase in value appear to me to be the Focus Mk1 RS, the Impreza P1, Evo 6 Makinen and so on - eg the cars that are slightly newer.
So, a VW Golf (Golf's have a good following) that was made in limited numbers (c. 500 UK Models) where a 3.2 litre 6 cylinder engine and 4 wheel drive was shoehorned in is always going to be a modern classic is it not?
The PH classifieds seem to show very few for sale and blue appears to be a rare colour.
Either way, regardless of investment potential etc it seemed a lovely car to me - some comments about it being slow but to me it felt fast.

Ditto the comment below, R32 is a good place to spend time and when you live with one they excel at everything in my experience. As a weekend only fun car they won't excite like something lighter / noisier but that's not the remit. They are GT cars really but if you want to drive it hard they can be fun - plenty of weight over the front wheels in a hatch lets the rear move if you want (after some under steer admittedly).

the truth is i liked the r32 just as much.
The R32 is brilliant at cruising down the motorway at 100mph its quiet
discreet classy sounds brill what more do you want
I'd have another one tomorrow..
