There have been ideas like this before. They alwasy get shot down, because someone may use the road like a personal race track if they can see it too clearly. Dumbest thing I have ever heard. Happened with the Solar powered Cats eyes, that stay eliminated even though light is not shining at them. You will be able to see curves in the road ahead and so on. Too safe aparently.

Too safe or not safe enough? It's no good being able to see the middle of the road for miles ahead if you can't see a deer/pedestrian/pothole/puddle/fallen tree. You still have to drive so you can stop in the road you can see to be clear, and for that you need headlights or street lights - I suspect glowing white lines give a false impression of increased visibility.

Yep they have them on a few roads round my way- the freaky bit is that you see them in your rear view mirror, strangely captivating to the point of being a new hazard!

Glowing paint is interesting, but time will tell if they can make somethign durable and cost-effective.

How about street-lamps that only turn themselves on when there's a car moving nearby?!
They had them on a section of a449 near hear until the p..... erm travelling scrap metal recyclers dug them up one night !!!!

great for a while

Our road markings are already sort of glow-in-the-dark. Not to the same extent but they do reflect light quite well already, the paint is full of tiny glass particles and other reflective material, so the idea is essentially already in practice and has been for about 50 years now.

Sorry, you're gonna have to explain to me how the "snowflakes" bit works?

Ok, they come on below a certain temperature, so what? it's very very often at low temperatures, but with exactly no chance of ice if it hasn't been raining! All that will happen, is that at some temp (and it will have to be way higher than 0degC, (just in case some ice did form, or was left over, and then the signs didn't glow, and someone crashed then sued the makers etc) the signs will glow, along the whole length of the road. So what? you know if it's cold, by er, it being cold, and in fact most cars now have an exterior temp gauge too (often with it's own ice warning function), and just looking out the windscreen and side windows at the road and its surroundings will give you a good idea if ice is likely to be present. So all that happens is people will get bored of all this "calling wolf" glowing rubbish, and ignore them. (like they currently ignore all the other excessive signage that warns about everything from "do try not to crash dear boy" to "don't drink and drive" (cause obviously that's going to swing the average drunk drivers opinion, not!)

Sorry, this is more pointless cr*p, lets just teach people to drive properly, responsible and in a progressive manner. Afterall that's what they do currently in the scandinavian countries and it seems to work!

You'll find some led ones on a 61 between Barnsley and wakefield. Also they have recently put some on the a636 on the bends heading towards Clayton west from jct39 of the m1.
Ahhh the magic road. Turn you lights off and follow the fairy lights, great fun, potentially dangerous. I'm starting to see why these may not be used much due to safety reasons...

They have a small section of the Beta light cats eyes at the Dunkeld Junction of the A9, flipping marvellous invention.

Lumo paint, bring it on!

Hopefully LED Roadway Lighting will solve the problem of councils turning lights off.

There is a road in Southport towards the promenade that has glow in the dark cat's eyes. Used to turn my lights off when no-one was about, and pretend to be in Tron. hehe

Love the idea of the temperature reactive paint for ice warning, true representation of the road surface temperature.

Suits me - after 5 years of driving in France and Germany - anything to get rid of Cats Eyes is fine by me...

True, but since the lights were turned off how many times have you tripped over on your way home from the pub after one too many local ales?

A nice idea but I think in rural areas it'll be quite unsightly. With more efficient vehicles lights now anyway i'm not sure the problem really exists to an extent in which it can warrant investment or the high levels of maintenence it could require...

Seriously mate I used to own a pub and having watched many a punter make their merry way home it's not the lights that are the problem.

It's them dam magnetic hedges.
