RE: PH buying guide: Ferrari 550 Maranello
Discussion
A couple of examples of Ferrari prices vs. looks in PistonHeads linked ads, similar production numbers:
1971 246 Dino price: £129,995 looks: 10
1979 Dino 308 GT4 price: £32,995 looks: 6
1973 365 GTC/4 price: £95,000 looks: 5
1973 DAYTONA 365 GTB/4 price: P.O.A. (est. £160,000) looks: 9
Is it any wonder the lumpen 550 is so down in price? That's the way it is with Ferraris. Looks account for at least half the price. The 550 doesn't have them. Period.
The exception to the rule are the 308/328/355/360 two seaters. They're cheap because of the huge numbers available out there. There's a glut of them, unlike the 550. The massive depreciation of horrid looking Ferraris like the FF and the lard bottom California will be astounding.
I noticed the few times I've posted on PistonHeads, there's nothing but angry comments after I've thrown a bucket of cold water on the heads to sober them up. Oh well, that's the way it is. Your fantasies don't make the slag next door into a supermodel.

Depreciation on a well looked after 550 is very good in reality, especially when this is a ferarri that could actually be used often unlike most that would live in a garage under a cover. It has 4 seats and a big boot!. Would you say a 288gto is not an amazing looking car? To say a 550 has "no looks period" is a completly daft opinion, period! Haha! The fact is this is one of the all time greats, period! You must be on your "period" 1971 246 Dino price: £129,995 looks: 10

passionately dislike the bonnet scoop
im sure it will be very cheap to run doing 12-15k miles a year, especially with its hard wearing interior and all encompassing factory warranty
you probably passionatly dislike these bonnet scoops as well then? Oh I forgot you are a fan of 2ltr merc hatchbacks with meaning less numbers lashed on them, each to there own, I spose?im sure it will be very cheap to run doing 12-15k miles a year, especially with its hard wearing interior and all encompassing factory warranty

You prefer 4wd 2ltr mercs, we know, boring!im sure it will be very cheap to run doing 12-15k miles a year, especially with its hard wearing interior and all encompassing factory warranty
difference of course is the merc is a tool to do everything, will take a hammering of 1000 hours a year use in its stride, will be equally as happy doing my daily commute in london as it will blasting around my local country lanes, will fit all my aged relatives in the back and the weekly shop for 3 households in the boot, it will blend in and wont draw attention from the BiB, vandals or the jealous, and is fully warranted so no big bills. Where as the fezza is a weekend play toy
now the AMG A merc and a weekend play toy that would be nice, although i would prefer a 996 GT3 RS over some fragile Italian posing pouch I would have to rent a parking space of a neighbour
This would be perfect and should hang on to is money as well as the fezza

So would it be better if it had 3 bonnet scoops or would you prefer none at all? I think its a clever homage to one of the most significant cars ever built so for you to say you passionatly dilike it is rather sad, as are you. Name one v12 italian supercar that isn't fragile and will cost a fortune to maintain? Even a v10 gallardo has the potential to ruin but it just isn't the point. If you can't afford to look after it don't buy it. As for the merc vandals/ jealous/thieves would be onto a brand new AMG merc sraight away. As for the filth, to hell with them, just don't drive like a knob and they should leave you alone! Away back under your hedge.

personal taste, the 3 scoops for me seams to fit into the balance of the cars design, the scoop on the 550 sits on the bonnet like an unburst zit, not a fan of the 550s style in general, too much like a supra which cheapens the car IMO it is better looking than the vile 458 thou
if i was after a Ferrari I would probably go for a 360 Scud, not that I would ever be in the position to have one

and I'm with Harris on their OCD Control over who gets to drive what and when and what its allowed to be driven against, and their specially prepped cars for each part of any performance test

Also in the camp of fantastic car but dont like the bonnet scoop , now if they had the front of a 465 of the same era it would be far nicer

A less than inspiring looking car. As a result of the gaudy and tasteless Miami Vice Testarossa and ugly 348, Ferrari and Pininfarina went too far in the opposite direction with their first couple of new era front engine V12 cars, and ended up without any styling personality. You see these at a big gathering of Ferraris and they fade into nothing. I guess it's the perfect Ferrari for people who don't want anybody to know they're driving a Ferrari. Maybe that's an appeal in itself for some people. Not for me. Not at those keep-it-running prices and potential headaches. That's why they're so cheap.
I completely agree with you but I don't think that makes it a less appealing car. It reminds me of the 365 GTB Daytona which itself was a big GT car when it was fresh back in the day. It's true Pininfarina aimed to distance this car away from the ostentatious designs of the 80s and early 90s, but it somehow ended up absorbing an Aston Martin-ish quality. Something in the line of present day DBS, Granturismo MC Stradal etc.But interestingly enough, this was the last FR V12 Ferrari officially raced. Myself being one of those oddballs who only respect sportscars that actually see on-track competition, this makes the 550/575 infinitely cooler than the 599 ever could be. If you look back, the greatest V12 Ferraris were only the ones that were raced. Which also reminds me how sad it is to not see a single racing Ferrari V12. The MC12 Corsa, and the V12 Vantage GT2 were the last of racing V12s overall in top tier racing. I stumbled upon an FXX onboard video a few days ago which reminded me how glorious V12s sound in anger.

45k so 1/2 the price of a 599. Still too expensive.
But Who in their right mind would buy a 550 over a 612 at the same price ?
Ferraris values are all about the numbers as in rarity. But Who in their right mind would buy a 550 over a 612 at the same price ?

The 612 is the better car no question but which will have the potential to increase in value? 612 nope 550? Possibly or much more likely. It also has ample power and an old school v12 lovely.
