I have seen a silver one in France that must have been doing about 160mph down the autoroute (some years ago). It looked completely stable and planted. It has aged extremely well too, as mentioned in the article. It deservedly has a following.

I think it was the S2 rather than the RS2, but the advert at the time as I recall said something like "My other car is a Porsche, but today I'm in a hurry".

On a slightly obscure level, I remember the RS2 appearing fleetingly in the famous "Not my style, know what I mean?" TV advert for the original Audi A4. I've checked, and the RS2 appears 42 seconds in. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIQ-283wKgg

A great car. I just preferred it's stable mate at the time, the Audi 100 based S4. Then Audi went odd and the S2 became the S4 when the 80 became the A4. All rather confusing!
It's an odd one! They were making the S4 (based on the 100) at the same time they were producing the S2 (which as you correctly stated was based on the 80).

The 80 series then became the A4 series and the 100 series then became the A6 series. So Audi produced the 80/S2 which then became the A4/S4 and they produced the 100/S4 which then became the A6/S6.

Absolutely epic cars, what i love most is the youth of today would not have a clue what it is so they would be so shocked that a tarted up Audi 80 has dispatched them in a split second.

Always remeber reading an article about the RS2 in GT Porsche magazine, the car in question was a stunning Imola Yellow example, the road tester said the following...."below 3000 rpm forget it, 3500 rpm things start to get interesting and at 4000 rpm prepare for take off.

Mega car, the original and for me the best fast estate ever.

I see Kia/Hyundai bring out brand new cars every six months or so. They're great cars- you should check them out if old motors like these are too dated for you.

An Audi thread with no mention of understeer, interior plastics quality or cocks. What has PH come to? biggrin

I had 2 Audi S2 Avants - they were plenty quick enough, so I can only imagine what an RS2 was like. The level of grip was very impressive too. Lockable rear diff was fun in the snow, making for some very sideways low speed action.

One of my all time faves. Ticks all the boxes for me.

Estate, discreet, mega quick, credibility with fellow car enthusiasts.

I thought this one on eBay that finished recently looked damn fine value at £9995 but open to offers. Too much for me though. frown

The red one is for sale at £29,995, with 32k on the clock (and rhd), but.... and its a big but.... its been for sale there forever, which suggests that the asking price is waaaaay more than the market will take (sorry to name names, but a bit like Oakfields, who's prices are pure fantasy-land imho)
Personally I'd see the red car at early £20k's, not £30k.....
Must be open to offers.

Audi & Porsche -great marriage. Do think a smaller turbo may have worked better.
A smaller turbo would have just made it an S2 avant. The S2 can be chipped to 290bhp, but it's flat out at that. The RS2 can be chipped to 380bhp which transforms the car and improves the lag.

Fantastic car and nice write up. I've always liked the concept of practical Audi estate with plenty of special Porsche go faster and stop quicker parts.

I also don't think the car has aged that much, in my opinion you could still debadge it and put false (newer) plates on it and fool a lot of people, certainly the vast majority of the "I've got a fast TDI brigade"

I can only guess the usual suspects who would mention such things have been fooled by the thread title.....

Stunning cars especially in that light blue cool I've always hankered after one however it nags away at me that I'll go bankrupt with the running costs. Are they expensive to maintain?

Absolutely loved mine. It had been a dream car & it delivered everything I thought it would.

If you are looking for parts have a look on German ebay. I sourced a few things from Germany that I either couldn't get from the UK or were priced beyond the crazy.

The RS shares an awful lot with a common Audi 80 in terms of switches & some dash panels, window regulators, stuff like that. I was also able to source a steering column panel from Audi UK for less that one from Germany from a breakers. (Mine was LHD)Audi are always wortha try but get an Etka CD, if it's still called that, and just give them the part number. The couple of times i said it's an RS2 were met with a blank look from the parts guy.

For some of the bits, just pretend its a Porsche. Pagid discs & pads can be got very reasonably from Euro car parts & calliper repair kits etc direct from Porsche. I did all 4 caliper seals, discs & pads on mine as it had been stood a while. The parts bill added up but it was by no means a killer.

Mine was in a fairly sorry state when I got it. It didn't boost properly and I spent a lot of money trying to find the problem. I took it to Dialyx to get the problem solved and they told me it needed a new ECU. I bought one, £1k and it made no difference. I carried on looking and eventually spotted that the recirculating dump valve was on the wrong way around and was dropping the boost off. I fitted it the right way around and problem solved. Dialynx had the car for a week & charged me a few hundred quid to not fix it. I wasn't impressed, their customer service wasn't great either.

I also fitted a Miltek exhaust and bought some CAT bypass pipes from Germany, very very very awesome. the noise was very addictive.

The only fault I had with the car was that it was LHD. I know its not a major problem but it was annoying when passengers went to the wrong side & when at some junctions it was difficult to see. It was also frustrating knowing that you had the power to overtake but just couldn't see round the tractor in front of you.

Amazing cars & I miss mine. Hopefully one day i'll get another.

You might want o check on the towing thing. I was led to believe that all S & RS Audi models are not type approved to tow. It seems totally crazy that they wouldn't be but that's what I heard, but could be wrong.

Cracking car. Enjoy.

I need one in my life - Always wanted one - right from launch (which incidentally it does rather well - for years and years wasn't this the fastest production car in the world from 0-30mph??)

I was rather impressed at the time, when a friend showed up in one of these, exact same colour and the car eventually turned out quite a hoot to drive smile

Very memorable line from Top Gear when they took one to the Brighton Speed Trials. They phoned up Audi UK and asked about launch technique for drag racing, they went to their technical department in Germany.
Audi UK "The engineers say take it to maximum RPM and dump the clutch"
Top Gear said: "You must be joking?"
Audi UK: "They are German, they don't joke"
