RE: PH Carpool: Audi RS2 Avant
Discussion
I regret selling mine
Bloke contacted me and wanted to buy it off me - was one of the original press cars, M120 MJB. He gave me what I paid for it 9 months ago, and figured it was silly to refuse as it had only cost me £40 for a oil pressure switch thus far...
One thing I loved about it is that it felt totally unbreakable - so well screwed together. The noise and boost was addictive, as was it's incognito looks to everyone except for a very small minority. Mucho fun nailing the throttle on the exit and just letting all 4 wheels hook up and catapult you out.
My only complaint was that around town, the clutch was heavy and it always felt very lethargic and unwilling until it was upto about 10-15mph. The obvious alternative was to sidestep the clutch@6000rpm, but doing that at every junction would have been OTT (that being said, the car felt like it could do that all day long!)

Love the RS2, one of my favourite cars of all time, and hopefully a purchase in the not so distant future. Having debated the merits of the B5 RS4, W124 500E and E34 M5, the RS2 is definitely the car that ticks most of the boxes for me in what I want next. As previously mentioned, a de-badge would also be on the cards, or possibly a re-badge (80 1.9 TDi )
Speaking of the C4 100 S4, I have heard talk of a "Plus" model before, with the engine out of the Audi V8 4.2 in 1992. Has anyone ever seen one?
Its an awesome machine, but would you really choose one over a B5 RS4? Speaking of the C4 100 S4, I have heard talk of a "Plus" model before, with the engine out of the Audi V8 4.2 in 1992. Has anyone ever seen one?
They can only go up but too many are no longer standard and well messed with.
I'm currently running a late S2, and these offer much of the RS2 thrills without the initial expense.
One of the great things about the Audi 80 platform is its modular nature. It's possible to retrofit many parts off other cars, including cruise control should you so wish
The I5 engine note is fantastic too! They're genuinely all weather performance cars too, even now very little will touch one in poor weather. The only downsides to he car are the overly light steering and the appalling fuel consumption. 30mpg is possible on a run, but very low teens are the order of the day with town driving.

Always had a massive soft spot for these.
Mum had a dark metallic green 80 when I was very young so always loved the shape and then saw one of these in a car park near Ben Nevis, typical blue, absolutely mint and I was sold.
I envy everyone that owns a mint example and drives it as much as they can.

Good topic and keep considering every time I see one but memory goes back to when I test drove one in 1993 (Audi Sales rep being up his own arse didnt help) and wasnt a patch on the UR quattro 20v RR I had just bought with uprated chip. Turbo lag and 6 speed box was tedious compared to the sheer grunt of the URQ from 1950 rpm
I also had 80 V6 2,6 in Sydney which suffered from massive understeer and wonder if this affects the RS2. Have kept the URQ all these years, and have had RS4 (V6) and RS6 (V8) which were great cars - would consider an RS4 over the RS2 again though. I found the interior on the RS4 far superior to the RS2

I really love these cars, it's such a shame that Audi have such a limited interest in continuing to supply parts for them. I'm currently building an RS2 saloon, it's going to be a very, very long project as some parts are almost impossibly difficult to come by or very expensive. It will be great when it's done though!

On a slightly obscure level, I remember the RS2 appearing fleetingly in the famous "Not my style, know what I mean?" TV advert for the original Audi A4. I've checked, and the RS2 appears 42 seconds in. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIQ-283wKgg
Brilliant Ad, (you just knew he drove a BMW) pity it would be the other way round today. Edited by myhandle on Monday 5th November 11:56
Funny thing was, back in 1993 while I was in Singapore, Audi ran a similar series of press commercials o imply that if you were the type of person that bought a car to impress the neighbours, then the Audi may not be for you. It totally flopped as that was exactly the reason Singaporeans bought their BMW and M-Bs...

I see Kia/Hyundai bring out brand new cars every six months or so. They're great cars- you should check them out if old motors like these are too dated for you.
Haha - you are one seriously amusing guy!!!Are you doing any stand-up comedy acts in the near future?Clearly, because the way a car looks to me is important, I have no place on this forum.
I own a 300bhp 20 year old 2 seat sports car, yep I am going Kia shopping tomorrow.....
Thanks for your appropriate comment.

Cool car indeed - but it is looking very dated now....
Obviously it's all personal opinion, but I think the Audi B4 platform cars have aged incredibly well. A late-model S2 coupe drove by me the other day and I was only thinking how modern they still look. I never thought they were the prettiest looking cars out on the roads even back then, as I feel they were too "chunkily"-styled for that (in a good way!), but they were always very elegant IMO, and I still feel that they are today. Could teach many a new car design a trick or two in that particular departmentBTW, does anyone remember the advert for the S2 coupe (IIRC), where the woman is going to a cocktail party on a stormy night? She uses her wellies to get from the house to the car, and then leaves them stuck in the mud when she drives off. Might have even been filmed in B&W
