I liked St Ives when we visited last year, took the park and ride, which i would recommend to anyone visiting for the day. No point driving in.

Visited St Ives last year, parked miles away from the sea front in a car park which had 'rubble' as a surface and paid a fortune for the privelege!

But it is a beautiful place so can see the justification for those prices. Beware of the seaguls though, they're trained ninja's!
You're better off leaving the car at the Park and Ride and taking the train in. Its only 10 minutes and you get a fantastic view of the estuary and Carbis Bay which you don't get from the road.

I agree to an extent with the latter comment, but the former is just nonsense.

If someone owns something that a person is willing to pay £X for, why is it considered "greedy" for them not to price their belongings at £X, and wait for that person to come along and buy it.
Offered 100k for two spaces but holding out for more.smacks a bit of money grabbing, but you are right... If someone wants to pay that, good luck to the sellers!

I live not too far from St ives and while it is pretty shocking for parking in the summer months it doesn't compare to busy cities 'up north' for the rest of the year. As for other parts of Cornwall? Never really found parking to be an issue.

Also, we probably have some of the most fun A and B roads in the country.

I think it's cheap. By the time you've waited for a space in one of the tiny pay and display at parks, you've used all your fuel anyway from either driving around or waiting and not daring to turn the car off just in case someone comes back.

Probably only about £12 more expensive than my normal cost of parking there.

this isnt that extortionate really.

I have an apartment in a complex on Newcastle Quayside that I rent out and that comes with a parking space, and when the property was bought the space alone was £10k ... and Newcastle isnt that difficult a city to park in at all ... but convenience has its premium wink

Anyone visiting St Ives would surely use the P+R, getting the train from Lelant / St Erth? Great little train ride in.

Agree with the poster who said there are much, much nicer towns / villages to visit though.

OTOH, St Ives occasionally worth it for the Porthminster Beach Cafe alone...

'As PHer ghibbett found out last year when insuring his BMW M3, the premium was cheaper when parked on the street compared on his driveway or in his garage.'

Some insurers see parking you car on the street as safer than drive way etc, thieves see the vehicle on the drive, they know which house to break into to get they keys... easier to get into the house then it is modern cars... if on the street they have to guess which house to break into (and get the right one) first...
yep, and alot of people claim from trying to drive into their garages and damagingtheir cars so the stats say you are more likely to claim with when you have a garage than not...

I actually live in St Ives.. have done all of my life, 25 1/2 years now..

I walk past these carpark spaces everyday on my way to the office.. they are pretty rubbish and difficult to get to or park in if you own anything bigger than that Fiat in the picures, the gradient is very steep on approach and inadequate turning area to get out of the space if you have a car parked either side of yours.

Land value in this area of St Ives is ridiculously high and I'm sure that these spaces will remain empty for 90% of the year, along with the majority of properties in this area since they are all guest houses and this is a seasonal location.

Anyone wishing to visit St Ives, I'll rent you out my driveway for a good price! ha!

The park and ride would be the smart choice for visitors but be quick, rumours about closing the branchline down have appeared in the local press in recent months but to talks to create a much larger park and ride nearby in St Erth.

As for visiting towns that are much nicer, I do agree however, not in this part of Cornwall.. hence the popularity of St Ives.

Well, simply having a garage might not be enough smile - and damaging your car while parking in it might not be the precise reason for the effect (it's probably just one of a whole load of reasons), but you can be sure the insurance companies wouldn't offer lower premiums for parking outside the garage, unless it were true.

OK I must not live in the right part of the country to benefit from being too lazy to put the car in the garage, my insurance is significantly lower because of it.

But, even just thinking about it for a sec, how does that work? Can I egg the car if it's in a garage? Can I slash it's tyres or roof (if you've got a convertible)? Can I brick the window and steal the stereo? Can I pour paint stripper on it? Is it going to get the door mirror kicked off? Is it going to get clipped by a delivery driver or a bus? Is it going to get scraped by careless passers-by? Is it going to have a grimy traffic cone dumped on it on Saturday night? Is it going to have a drunk driver plough into the back of it on a Friday after closing time?

I hear the sound of chains being yanked, tbqh.

ETA - Don't forget that should you fall victim to one of the above acts of vandalism, and have the temerity to claim for it, your premium will go UP because "it was your choice to put the vehicle in a compromising position".

Anybody who has tried (usually in vain) to park in St Ives will have some sympathy with this situation.
Only if they're lazy sods not prepared to walk 10 minutes into town. There's loads if you're prepared to walk a bit, and it's free.

We always use the park and ride (and get there at a sensible time) in St Ives. Although last time we were staying in Carbis bay so it was a 20 min walk or get the train at the bottom of the road from the apartment.
