My eldest son votes for the 4.7 litre wasserpumper over the ass-engined nazi slot car.

I love em both but if I had to choose one, the 928 wins.

...of the cars that is!

Nope, that's my friend's driveway. I don't have the 928 anymore but do have great memories though.

Standard ride height indeed. Alex, are you based in SW London? If so I think I bought the manifold from you a few years ago.

I was lucky enough to drive a 928 gt manual back in the late 90's..
Brutal, awesome sound.. Gearbox not too heavy bad at low speeds but came into its own on the motorway..
Felt much lighter than it looked.....

Here's my old one. It was a 1982 car with an S4 interior and Cup alloys (so purists won't be too happy!). Loved it and will have another one someday smile

We took my mates one along with my car to it's home country for the N24. The 7er is a stonking way to travel across Europe but the 928 is so very much better

Both of the above have had 4 figure bills but both are more than able to justify them.

This thread has got me curious, but what are these like at the lower end of the market, say around the £3k mark? This one caught my eye

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/89-F-PORSCHE-928-5-0-AUT...

I've emailed him re the water leak, I realise this could be a whole world of Bork but it could just be the sunroof thats leaking wink
Looks like a couple of dings in it but that wouldn't put me off. I actually like the colour too...

I currently run a 1983 Porsche 944 and a Saab 9-5 Aero so this would replace both of them. I ran an e34 m5 for nearly 3 years so am no stranger to more expensive to maintain metal, however I do as much work as I can myself.

Can these be done on my kind of budget?

They have a rep for costing slightly more to run than a Veyron but I'm not sure it's entirely fair. They're well made and if looked after don't seem to go through much in the way of cash. Personally, I'd buy solely on condition, especially at the bottom end of the budget, and look for something very correct. A bit of work on the gearbox here, a cambelt there (S4/GTS has the longest cambelt of any production car, ever) and a service could see you the wrong side of £3000 as a bill anyway

Seeing it is Christmas and Im bored, I came across this thread.

I have had a high ish mileage 928 GTS manual for 3 years. Blinding car and a very very different car compared to driving the auto. Proper GT drivers car.
I have some really hairy stuff and sometimes it is a pleasure to get in something that you can really relax and enjoy.
It is just not fast enough to kill you the moment you touch the right peddle, but exciting enough to give you a buzz.
The wheels never spin up or loose grip unexpectedly, which leads to a very exciting, controlled drive which quite frankly can be a revelation.
The Hairy stuff is certainly adrenalin producing and I always arrive home thankful but its great to be able to drive a car like the GTS every now and again without that niggling fear.
