My car has been making some funny steering noises lately and has been diagnosed as needing new rack/pump car is 3 1/2yrs old the dealer says its out of the 3yr warranty and would like to charge me 2k+ to replace them but would anyone know if I can use the not fit for purpose on the sale of goods act as an arguing point to have it repaired

That was my first thought also.

OP - I'd get a second opinion before spending anything but if it is the rack I'd expect a significant 'goodwill' gesture from the dealer. Take it to head office.

Might just be the pump. Is it electric?

In that case, if the dealer aren't playing ball send a letter/email off to Ford UK outlining the situation, telling them how disappointed you are that you have such a significant failure after a relatively low number of miles and time. Hopefully you will get back some kind of goodwill offer.

Probably worth reading this too... http://www.justanswer.com/uk-ford/5s7ag-ford-monde...

Seems to be a common problem.

Very common failure on latest Mondeo.

10p Seal starts to break up inside rack, blocks filter in bottom of PAS reservoir, system gets noisy - eventually fails with loss of assistance (on LH turn?).

Replacement rack from Ford - £1100 +, require dropping subframe to fit - hence £2k main dealer price.

Recon rack £300 (if you can find one) and a couple of hundred to fit at an indie.

Did one just a few weeks ago 09 car, 56K miles.

Always fascinating how a 10p failure turns into a £2k fix, same with the boxster IMS failures (caused by design fault of leaving bearing seal in).
£1.1k for a new rack is a Porsche price BTW - a sobering wakeup call for people who think fords are cheap(er) to run.

I think mileage will come into this, but if its not unusually high and you have full ford history I'd be getting the dealer to approach ford for an explanation/contribution - pointing out you are aware this is a common problem and asking about their view on this regarding the SOGA.

Ive got an electric power steering rack, damn thing failed, 55 plate. Cost 1200 quid to sort, the part alone was 900.

The garage who fixed it said when they called the dealer, they had a number in stock, which made them wonder if it was coincidence or something that happens to often.

Why does my power steering need a computer also, it's just a little city car.

^^^^^ This

Or the recon + indy solution someone suggested above.

[Chances of SOGA remedy on a car over 3 years old is IMO nil]
