Jaguar Steve seems to be on a one man mission to 'out' people with miss spaced plates, the reason? Its the only way of identifying the driver of a car!!! Really? So take my plate (S7 AUY) or any other plate on here and if that car were involved in a serious crime, now according to Steve if my plate is miss spaced S7AUY I will not get caught "!!! come on the police will run any combinations of the the plate and the way its written and if they get a hit off a completely miss spaced plate and the model and make of car its meant to be on you will be getting a visit, take your X GOLD X for example, if it runs someone over Im pretty sure they will find the bentley its registered to !!!

More likely Steve gets his kicks from his 'nosey neighbour' lifestyle which Ill bet if we examine it is not whiter than white! You go Steve I feel much safer at night knowing you are out there

Seen H4 XEY a few times, but coincidentally only seen/noticed EA57OFT this week, was correctly spaced on the rear I think? Was in Bawtry, with 5HUX, sadly spaced as written. Also saw 1 SSY there, although thats for the other thread.
Lot's of good plates in Bawtry

How many times can this be rehashed without it sinking in, you can't pick and choose, by these standards *any* intentional breaking of the law cannot be justified including driving over the speed limit, which every single person moaning on these threads does regularly!

And breaking the speed limit carries far more potential to effect other peoples lives than mis-spacing a number plate.
I have enormous respect for your PH persona Steffan, you are one of the go to guys here for sensible, well thought out opinions but on this you've jumped the shark (Steve I've given up on, why he doesn't just move to another county where he doesn't despise everyone is beyond me).

I agree completely with the consensus that any plate that is impossible to read correctly should be banned, all these absurd screws and silly fonts that could lead to a mis-identification need to be stopped for obvious reasons but if a plate reads J1M instead of J 1M there will be no adverse consequences at all (except to annoy the people on this thread). It will be correctly read by ANPR or CCTV in the event of a crime and won't give the person driving any advantage over somebody with a normal plate, and if Jim does get a tug he has to shrug his shoulders and accept it.

BUT FOR CHRIST SAKE all this "above the law" nonsense and "any body with this attitude is clearly a menace to society" has escalated beyond all parody in this thread. Moving one letter 2 centimetres on a number plate does not make you Charles Manson, and again, with apologies for repeating myself, breaking the speed limit is an exact equivalent in terms of sticking up two fingers to the law and we all do it!

We even get lists here now, illegal modding, chav-plate spacing, yellow line parking but nobody ever adds "speed limit breaking" because you all do it and choose to ignore it in order to exclude yourself from your own conditions!

I know I'm wasting my time here. I've told the story of taking my plate to the ANPR depot several times and it's always been ignored because it doesn't fit the rhetoric, so I know this post isn't going to hit any fertile ground but really, Steffan, I implore you to apply some of your usual clarity and honesty to this one.

I'm not on a mission here guys, I do enjoy this thread and I've even had the honour of my plate being on it! Just, you know, reset the bar a bit because things are getting a little Orwellian around here.

smile
Very sensible response. I have to say I do cringe at plates that have non standard fonts and bolts between letters to try and make other letters, but I don't automatically think the guys must be a serial law breaker.

Ever since I was a kid, I've always loved personal plates and we spent many journeys on the motorway spotting 'nice plates'

I will confess to buying the wife a numberplate from DVLA when the 11 plates came out. It was sold by DVLA to read her name, it looks a lot better (in my opinion, but evidently not from some people on this thread) with a space after a letter rather than before. It's standard font, standard everything bar 1 space being moved to the right by 1 character. Never been stopped by the old bill, we have ANPR car parks round our way which the car is registered to and we get billed each month with no problem.

It does make me chuckle to see how worked up people get about these things.

Obviously I don't speed, so you can't tar me with that brush smile

Indeed, folk like Jaguar Steve and Steffan make me fear for the future of the human race (OK, an overstatement, but you know what I mean...) Why the hell do they get worked up about something that is so bloody utterly inconsequential?

The term 'get a life' springs to mind...

You are missing (possibly on purpose) an important distinction. I break the speed limit regularly, but I don't don't have a plate on each end of the saying "fk your limits, I am entitled to do it differently".
If I get a caught speeding, I don't start bleating about my rights to free expression, I pay up and take my punishment.

I think you mean affect - look it up.

No it isn't. When I break the speed limit I do my level best to be as anonymous as possible. I do it as discretely as I can because I am trying to get away with something I know is against the law.

Chav plates, whatever pathetic excuses you trot out, are not supposed to be "invisible" or discrete - if they aren't supposed to say "Oi look at this" then what in holy flip are they for?

Orwellian - the new Godwin's - wah! you won't let me have a chav plate, it's Big Brother - bks.

I could'nt agree more. Several of this thread's comments keep me coming back as I just find it so amusing that there is nothing more interesting in their lives, hell I even find myself posting some "naughty ones", 1 and 2 made to look like an R, for example.

I also bought my wife a mispaced plate, and I have had mine mispaced for 18 years on multiple cars, I love them, and I even have to admit to being stopped for speeding ( oh I feel double dirty writing this ) and the nice pair of chap coppers complimented me on my plate, which was mispaced, saying if all plates were like that then in accident situations, it would make their lives alot easier.

/The irony.
