I saw "P4 SPY" on an Aston Martin today. The owner clearly has delusions of being James Bond. biggrin
Yes, couldn't possibly be any other explanation for it could there? rolleyes
Oh FFS. Do you not get what a grinning emoticon means? You're happy enough to use a rolling eyes one. rolleyes
Not really. The plate itself is not worthy of inclusion in the thread on any grounds so the grinning emoticon is neither here nor there.

The thread title is "what CRAPPY personalised plates have you seen recently?", not "what personalised plates have you seen recently?". Some people seem to have trouble telling the difference.

I knew a chap with 'something' (I forget the first letter) then a space, JB 700 on a series 5 DB4 that he explained as a James Bond connection.

He was such a nice guy, too. Odd. Very odd

Nope. I'm with Jon on this. P4 SPY on an Aston is crap.

On the M3 just now...

A gorgeous Mercedes-AMG GT with the plate "W7 WKD". Seriously???
Seriously what?
Wikkid. Innit, man. rolleyes
The owner could be called William Kenneth Darby. Or myriad other names with the initials WKD

If it was properly spaced with a proper font etc I think it's just an average personalised plate. I wouldn't bother getting such an average plate, but I can't see a problem

Absolutely. If the intention is to invoke the 007 connection. However, short of asking the driver (which I presume didn't happen) why the "SPY" plate, then it's just a personalised plate. They might be the owner's initials, they might be the initials of his company or anything else other than trying to make a James Bond connection.

Much like posting up "BWM" plates when seen on BMWs.

Butchered plate and dodgy stickers!
I see dodgy stickers but what's wrong with the plate ?

C13 TOY is fine in my book
What we are guffawing at is the '3' moved closer to the '1' to read CB TOY. Yes, what's it all about (Alfie)
Spacing is an acceptable 11 mm so, guffaw away but you are wrong !

Saw what I'm guessing was a BMW M4 today in baby poo yellow with the number plate M4 FOF but spaced like this: M4 F OF
Now that surely qualifies for crap? Haha

Indeed you do.

Now stop being so precious.
Post relevant plates then.

Apologies. I will be sure to IM you each and every time I have something to post on this thread to see if you deem it worthy of inclusion and seek your permission.

Seriously, what exactly is your problem with me?

In my opinion, having "SPY" in your numberplate on an Aston is crappy. That's my opinion, and that makes my post admissible on this thread.

Calm down, I don't have a problem with YOU at all. As you say, in YOUR OPINION it's crappy. The mere fact it's a personalised plate does not make it crap and until you confirm the relevance of the "SPY" part it's merely a personalised plate. YOU'RE the one making the crappy connection because it happens to be on an Aston.

I'm making some assumptions here so feel free to correct:

Legal font?
Legal spacing?
No extra screw caps or otherwise butchered in any way?

Then it's a perfectly legitimate plate.

Same with the W7 WKD plate you commented on up the page too. Without knowing the significance behind them, they're merely personalised plates.

SPY - if trying to seem mysterious and James Bond-like is crap.

But perhaps his name is Simon Peter Yates, which makes it more relevant.
That plate might have been on his old Porsche but then he decided he fancied an Aston next and just transferred the plate over.

We have no idea. Just as for the WKD plate.

You're quite correct - both were legally spaced and perfectly legitimate. And yet each, in their own way, were a bit naff on the respective cars that they were on.

My understanding of this thread (and I'm happy to be corrected) is to be On Topic is to highlight personalised plates that you spotted and that you consider to be a bit naff and crappy. I don't think that there is a prerequisite for them to be illegally-spaced, use an illegal font, or use extra screw caps in order to qualify. But, as I said, I'm happy to be corrected there.

The majority of people would associate "spy" and an Aston Martin with James Bond. Personally, if I owned an Aston, I wouldn't have a "SPY" numberplate even if my name were Stephen Patrick Young, due to the aforementioned association.

Anyway, there's no reason to fall out over it. Perhaps I got a bit prickly, which isn't like me on the whole.

I think we will all agree that they're definitely not great plates, no matter what they're intended to mean.

I wouldn't have a SPY plate on an Aston either for the same reasons you wouldn't, but my point is without ascertaining the reason for the SPY plate, it remains just a plate.

My take on the thread is to be eligible for inclusion it must be obviously crappy in some way, and not just down to someone's interpretation of it.

You feel free to get prickly; I have that effect on people. wink
