We have the barge threads for big lazy yachts but no threads for cheap, second hand and exciting cars.

I don't know whether this thread will kick off or not but I thought it's worth a try. Too much diesel and sensible drizzle floating around on PH these days.

This looks like an interesting buy, although I wonder if the price is correct?

Toyota MR2 Supercharger, Manual, T-bar (1989)

£2795

Edited to add: Some ground rules:

A) No boring or ordinary every day cars. For example a Golf or 5 Series diesel doesn't qualify no matter how many horses are under the bonnet. However good hot hatches (e.g. 106 Rallye) are great candidates.

And that's it. I doesn't need to be fast, just the sort of car you give a second look at after you've parked it in the garage on a Sundays evening. Fun and special to drive.

Good thread. That looks like decent value from a performance perspective.

In that price range I would be looking at a low mileage Clio trophy.

How about a TVR S3 for £3000. Would be difficult to get such a large smile for less with included wind in the hair motoring. Perfect for the winter ahead wink May be a bit biased though as I have the V8 but that's definitely outside of the thread budget.

Very nice TVR, probably a lot better than a £5000 Chim?

1-5k is a pretty big scope of budget, plenty of hot hatches fit in that budget, if you like retro, MK2 Golf GTI. I would go and find a Clio 172 CUP like my little sister runs, refresh the suspension, and Moreago remap to 202BHP. Should be enough left over in the 5 grand for tax and insurance.

Can you get a decent Mitsubishi FTO in the £1-5k price range?

Subscribed. Regular lurker on the 5-20k thread, and also the Barge thread, but this is right up my alley.

Suggestions must include adverts, real life 'spotteds' not just cars you have pulled out of the air!

Great idea OP.

Some good suggestions so far. I would buy that V6 Alfa just so I could make it shout naughty noises on a quiet Sunday morning wink

TVR is my favourite at the moment though biggrin
