Our FL2 HSE is by far and away the best family car we have ever had.

Test drove all the usual suspects before hand and just found them all lower in quality and just not as well resolved.

And as for the comparison of an FL2 against the Evoque, where was it? All I read was a thinly veiled piece on the Evoque.

Come on PH you can do better than that!

If I told you that the FL2 was also developed at the ring would that help....??

I can see the appeal of the Evoque, but it doesn't appeal to me, also how do both cars fare when doing tougher off roading without low range?, like others have said it's an expensive car I would rather stretch to an RRS if I was spending that kind of money too, in fact really I would rather stretch to a FFRR but that is pretty much the cost of 2 Evoques!!.

Theres a local girl that i know through friends of friends and what not whos "daddy" is very rich and her first car after passing her test was a White brand spanking new TTS. Now she has moved onto an Evoque, i know this because it has the same dumbass reg plate with her birth year and initials.

THAT is why i hate the evoque.

I have a D4 and while it is blingy, I have put sump guards, rock sliders and ATR tyres on and its every bit the workhorse my D3 was.
My wife has an Evoque, obviously we don't NEED it to be a capable off roader or particularly need the space but we have 3 kids and I like the fact they are sat up a bit higher and have permanent 4wd under them for inclement motorway journeys. I also like the styling and spec levels of the most basic model. Ours was less than £30k on the road with full leather and metallic, we just didn't need the toys as we already had a D4.
It was built less than 25 miles from our house which I take as a HUGE plus when considering what to buy.
We also have an old 90 if we need to get properly dirty!
Summary is that if you want a taller, safer, funky looking well equipped hatchback buy an Evoque. If you want to go offroad or have a couple of dogs, don't.

Inclined to agree. I was certainly less predisposed to like it as a result. In fact it's a wonderful thing to drive and a nice place to ride. Ultimately ruled out for me because I need a bigger boot at this stage in my life (two small kids and accompanying detritus) but I do like the car for what it is.
I disagree. Pistonheads readers is not really their target market. More wealthy mums who like Made in Chelsea and are pretty materialistic - for whom Victoria Beckham may well be a suitable role model. Had they used Ray Mears, there may be a handful more Pistonheaders buying them but a hell of a lot of the aforemantioned mums who have done but wouldn't have. Land Rover know who their target market it and the sales success and waiting lists is proof of this.

Not sure I'd necessarily say that Ray Mears should be the name above the door, only that I was put off by the Beckham connection.

Worth noting that it was used briefly and very early only. I wonder if the reaction wasn't great, and so they played it down.

You can fit biggish dogs into the Ewok. We've got two largish brutes and they will, grudgingly, travel in the wife's although they do prefer the sapce in the Disco.

(This is one our dogs in the local stealer's demo last year. He's looking pleased with himself because he's just nicked two mackrell that were defrosting on our kitchen worktop.)

Not an Evoque fan at all - but if lots of fluffy people want to buy lots of fluffy cars and keep lots of grity Brits employed I'll pat it on the back ALL day long. Build 'em what they want, not what you think they want!!

I'm not in the least bit fluffy, far from it, thanks though!

Yeah we CAN fit the dogs in the back but its not too comfortable for them!

The younger dog, pictured isn't too bothered, but the older dog (more used to FFRR and latterly Discos) is not too happy. It's headroom they're lacking really - a Mondeo hatchback actually has more dog room.

Having just taken delivery of an Evoque in the family (which having had defenders, series 3's and discoveries over last 15 years) the freelander is old hat now, the design is really ageing and I think it'll struggle to go on in it's current guise for all that much longer. The comment re iphone vs your old nokia is very close to the truth.

Whilst not a fan ,I know three families who own and rave about theirs. Although the fuel consumption doesn't sound brilliant, one guy I know reckons his old style 3.0 d X5 is more frugal than his wife's Evoque.
To me,even the blingiest Evoque still looks less chavvy than most RRSs and a million times better than a MINI ryman.

Erhm... you hate the car because of the fact that a girl got it from her dad... What does that say about the car other than you being jealous on said girl?

Our FL2 is now on 76,000 and has been very reliable. It's the basic 'S' model, bought from the dealer as an ex demo car and used very much as the family workhorse. I put a set of BF Goodrich All Terrains on it and in the snow it's brilliant. The only drawback of the basic spec is a poor audio system which I could upgrade but haven't bothered to do so. Ours has climate control but not sure if that was an extra at the time. I really can't think of any other extras that you get with the higher spec models that are worth paying for (including Terrain Response, which strikes me as pretty irrelevant with a manual transmission and the fixed height suspension of the FL).

I find it a wonderful touring car. I've now made four trips to the Highlands in it at 600 miles each way and every time I'm impressed at how unstressed and ache free I am at the end of the journey. It's easy on the motorway and genuinely rewarding to drive through Glencoe! The fuel economy is not as good as I'd like but otherwise, I think it's proved really good value.

My Mrs has had an Evoque for 8 months now and it's a great little car. I really like it. It's a lovely, modern machine that drives really well. The interior is very nice too.

I'm not sure about the off-road comments in the article - I understood that it has sorter overhands and better departure angles than the FL2, so is actually marginally better off-road than a FL2 and anyway is way more capable than any owners will need (who's greatest requirement for off-road capability will be driving down a snowy lane).

Would've considered an Evoque but in the end I think they're just too expensive. I mean, knocking on £47k for the one you had?

Merc's prices aren't exactly cheap, but my current C looks like a bargain in comparison.

Would a base spec Evoque appeal? Rubber mats, cloth seats, no electric handbrake, tailgate, teasmade etc? Even, gasp, wind up windows?

Our 2003 Forester XT has none of the finery of these cars but when I'm sliding it around the gravel roads that serve as shortcuts around here at 80kmph do you know what, it doesn't bother me. Lovely balanced car, easy to heel-and-toe whilst wearing wellies, OK steering feel, no nannying electronics and hasn't put a foot wrong in 9 years of ownership.

Ours is base spec as they come now, Td4 (Thats OK as I don't drive it very often!) manual tailgate, no sat nav, sunroof, cameras etc and I still think its very well specced for the money. Start adding options to any smart hatchback and you can end up spending silly money!

Nothing to do with her not wanting to sleep with you then wink
