And believe it or not Mr. Clarkson himself comes round to the turbo as well:

Had 3 turbos 1 964 and 2 996's the 964 was a fantastic car felt so solid full of character with the air cooled engine single turbo and lag ! the tip 996 i didnt gel with gearbox too slow to react but thr manual again was fabulous with a dms remap it was silly quick , a very competent all weather supercar you really can use everyday but the only downside was for me the noise even with headers and sports exhaust it still didnt quite get me buzzing so i sold it and got an sl 55 amg with centre resonators removed it sounds epic ! better than the porsche ? probably not and certainly not built as well but when you put your foot down it makes the change worthwhile :-)

Oh well, I suppose the only course of action open is to drive 930, 964 and 993 Turbos and a couple of GT2s of various types and then face the fact I may have to eat my words. Bummer, eh? biggrin

Seriously though, the piece was aimed mainly at the 997 and certainly 996-onwards so this was the thrust of the argument. Glad to see it's got everyone talking though.

Cheers,

Dan
Damn it, just when we'd reached a satisfactory 'agreement', you go and completely undermine my argument!
Nevermind.
Now go and arrange your Turbo group test and report back to us so we can debate further with a fully comprehensive review on which to base our opinions.
You've got a tough job Dan wink

I'd be quite content with a basic Carrera (at a push, an S).

Plenty quick enough, looks better without additional tat and cheapest.

+ 1, does 85%+ of what the Turbo can achieve, and the fun is in me trying to make up the rest.

I went to the Porsche Experience Centre for a GT day started off in the GT3 and didn't get out, left the GT2 in the car park the GT3 was absolutely sublime a car I will own one day.

911 Turbo just does nothing for me.

I don't think that's quite fair on the 911. The original turbo was a flagship for performance.. super car pace in a regular sports car model. A giant slayer.

I think the turbo is still built to be the performance flagship. Supercars today tend to be 4wd, slightly safer and easier to drive (for better or for worse) and how it matches up to its task is maybe a question but I don't think it was ever designed to be the safe 911 for older gents. I'm still in my 20's (just) and I fully appreciate the turbo's values.
I disagree. Perhaps that's how the original Turbo was positioned, granted, but more recently whilst more focused 911 derivatives have emerged to fill the performance envelope, the Turbo has definitely become a fast, but more sanitised and overweight GT car. The very fact that it was available with a torque converter auto, and that the majority of owners opted for that over the manual, just about says it all! No self respecting driver's car is ever offered with a slush box, only fat GT cars. smile

I have limited experience of 911s....... but from what I've experienced and read about, a 997 GT2 RS is the one I want to try/own above all others

I think a lot of the disputing views come from what people want from the driving experience of a car; for me I want to grab it by the scruff of the neck and thrash it to the limiter and bang through a few gears without getting (too much!) in trouble.

My housemate has a 996 Turbo X50 and you just couldn't drive it like that, even if you weren't 'on it' properly you'd still be looking at a ban when into 3rd. Don't get me wrong, it's hilariouslyscarily quick, but that's not my bag (and I assume it isn't Dan's), in fairness though, that seems to be more of an affliction of modern 'performance' cars than anything really.

I had a GT3 RS for the summer and I now have a 997 turbo manual with a Europipe exhaust for the winter.

A pattern I am happy to repeat for fairly obvious reasons, to a Porsche fan

I wonder how many people arguing with the article have actually driven a 997 Turbo.

They are both too fast, and have way too much grip to be fun on the road, if you have the ability to drive a car.

If you're a point and squirt guy, then I can see the appeal, but if you actually like a car to move around, or get any where the limit of grip, a 996/997 turbo on decent tyres will have you risking far too much to get that enjoyment.
Why do you need to have a car sliding around on the limit of grip to be having "fun"?

Cool, it would be interesting to get your perspective on each after having owned both. How do they compare and what are they like to own and drive?

For me the main problem is the looks - i've always preferred the looks of the n/a 911 which (996 aside obviously) has been sublimely simple and pure. Turbo looks? No thanks.

[Quote] Orcfromthesouth = What I learned was that the car is sooo easy to drive over your limit, that you constantly overshoot corners and need to brake so hard that understeer is inevitable. So you learn to mash the brakes, double clutch the 305’s so they don’t mess up (no PDK for me), and accelerate as hard as you dare on exit once you have the ‘jet aircraft’ properly set up. And when you do, it’s exhilarating. And you look like Mr. Moss. But that is on the track. As most of us will do, if you do silly things on an open road, you will be doing them at unthinkable speeds, which can get scary. But that’s me. Seems I don’t trust myself with a loaded Turbo in my hands.

This is exactly as I felt it. How do you feel about the boxter in comparison?
