This is my new car:

Looks exactly like all the other diesel A6s on the road but packs a 350hp V8 smile. With the SE suspension and smaller wheels I think it looks very conservative but it makes dirty noises and goes rather well.

The other contender I was considering was the Skoda Superb 3.6 4x4 DSG. Not as fast as the Audi but still considerably faster than anyone would expect it to be.
That's tremendous! Hit the "stealth" nail on the head there.
no no and no.

Whilst i agree its a lovely car it is NOT stealthy

Petrol heads will know
non petrol heads will see a modern audi and expect it to be fast.

My definition of stealth is 'a car that doesn't look and people don't expect to be fast' - not sure how many agree

This is stealthy. 1500bhp in an old golf with no obvious signs of modifications from the outside

Ok, I'll take that. I would say the Audi is a nice example of everyday stealth. That mk2 is obviously an example of extreme stealth, although I would be suspicious of any golf that's as clean as that! (plus the smoked indicators and cross headlights)

I'll take the stick for suggesting a diesel but....

before Christmas I picked this up, I was looking for a family wagon that had a good turn of speed, but looked a little more subtle, apart from the duel pipes it could be just another Tdi A6....ok ignoring the 20" rotors lol
But bloody ell those Bi turbo Diesels go, 60 in just over 5secs and mid range to get faster cars sweating. So far I've had 2 people ask me at the lights "what the hell is in that!" the look when I say "just a diesel" snigger. Once the Pistonheads sticker goes on it may give a few more clues.

yes I know its filthy but it got even worse after a weeks climbing trip in Scotland :-)

That's awesome smile

5.3 seconds to 60 and 44mpg sounds like a superb compromise to me.

I've got a modified Impreza classic that is quite light (1.2t) and makes a little over 365bhp and I'd bet on the road there's very little in it unless the Impreza gets driven in a truly bonzi way which to be honest I wouldn't do and in most situations unless I'm over 4k I'd bet the Audi is probably must quicker with such huge torque reserves. Oh and the Impreza does about 17mpg on average.

I just read the reviews on the Audi and I'm really impressed. It looks great, it well kitted out and has a stonking engine!

Boba's Golf is of course stupidly fast but just as a small correction it has 1150PS, not 1500bhp.

I really like that, but sorry, that is in no way stealth. Most people would look at that and expect it to be quickish.

Saab 9-5 Aero estate. With a noobtune map (The cost of a tank of fuel) you have 275BHP which is still rapid even by todays standards. Cheap to buy and will quite easily do mid to high 30's on a run, with plenty of room for the children and dogs.

I love mine! Especially the look on that kids face when you go past his Type-R on a slip road with a dog in the back hehe

A picture of mine at the local woods doing what it does best. Lugging kids and dogs about!

I've not read all 29 pages so sorry if I'm repeating someone, but the transit from Top Gear a few years back with the XJ220 motor, would catch out more than a few biggrin okay it's not a car or even a production model.. Maybe this post is a bit irrelevant.

The bi-turbo diesel Audi's even sound damn good aswell. They could possibly be the perfect all rounder.

It's not just Audi - BMW have been doing them for a while and the early ones with a simple remap can have 350-400 bhp.

Imagine pulling up next to this at the traffic lights if it's been mapped..

400bhp from a simple remap starting at 280? Are you sure about that?

There are quite a few 335/535D's around where I live, they are great cars. A friend has a 335D thats had a remap (340bhp) and its a brilliant bit of kit although its not very fuel efficient which sort of makes me question the choice of a diesel engine. I can see him off in the Impreza if I work it hard but the 335D/535D's have such a superb level of accessible performance its just a fantastic car for every day use.

Yeah that's a good choice although as has been said most would expect it to be quick as it's an Audi!

Oh, and "rotors" are brake discs not the wheels, or rims as they seem to be now called.

I agree, 400 is a bit fanciful, but both the petrol and diesel can get to north of 350 bhp relatively easily. You can get a superchips bluefin thing that will add 69bhp to an 535d E60. Its the torque (nearly 700nm with the bluefin) that bends the mind a bit. I'm surprised about the fuel, I know of someone with a Z4 35i (ok, petrol not diesel) thats been mapped to around 360 and the economy hasn't really changed.
