Let’s look at the actual numbers
Focus ST1(who wants all the needless extras) Base price - £21,995
Focus ST3 with every conceivable option ticked - £28,870
BMW M Sport 135 – Base price - £32,150
BMW M Sport Plus 135 – With all options - £43,750
You're looking at the old shape 1 series I think. A 3dr M135i is £29,995 OTR including leather and xenon. Minus 9% discount.Focus ST1(who wants all the needless extras) Base price - £21,995
Focus ST3 with every conceivable option ticked - £28,870
BMW M Sport 135 – Base price - £32,150
BMW M Sport Plus 135 – With all options - £43,750
A ST2 at £20k with 1000 miles is superb VFM though.

Would be interested to see how the 125i M sport rates against these.. 220hp in basically a M 135i chassis
I don't think it is an M135i chassis. The M135i has quicker steering for starters. 'M Sport' is more to do with trim level than anything else.Chris, how would you rate these cars against the Audi RS3? Is there any chance of a test of the Ford or Renault against a basic £29,995 M135i?
I think BMW have really thrown a curve ball at the performance car world!

But the old Focus ST did??
Yes it did, at the time it was a fresh design with a 'nice' version of orange, sounded great and was available in 3 doors. Personally the Vxr probably tops it out of these 3 for me, but there just isn't anything that makes me want one. Can't put my finger on why though.
I also buy cars for the way they look which rules out the Focus and Megane instantly. The VXR is a clean but fairly anonymous design.
The truth is that I wouldn't spend hard cash on any of them, I'd wait for the Civic Type R (though they've ruined the looks on that too).
The real truth is that about 90% of new cars are too ugly for me to even want or desire them any more and the slitty windows and minimal glass all conspire to make the claustrophobic and less wieldy which rather defeats the point for me.

I don't know how Vauxhall get away with pricing it more expensive than the Golf, ST, and Megane.
As with all new Vauxhall's if you pay list price you're a complete tool. Vauxhall alway offer huge discounts on their cars, a bit of shopping round and you'll get a new VXR for £23-24kCan't watch this till I get home, but looking forward to it.
As for my thoughts. Wouldn't touch a Renault. If they were the last drivers cars on earth, I would give up my hobby. They should rename them "Renault Sport Money Pit" quite honestly.
That leaves the Astra and Focus. I'd probably have the Astra, although if my bro-in-laws Astra SRI is anything to go by, that doesn't score too highly on reliability either.
I'd probably go for the GT86 or BMW 135 over any of these.
