An RX8 with a more "sensible" engine?
Yes. Although maybe even smaller and with less power and weight. I also think rear/mid engined would be good for this. Aim it at current Fiesta, Twingo buyers as an alternative.
Certainly fits my understanding of the Chinese market (from occasional visits) - something halfway between an RX8 and a CLS. Or for MG, between and RX8 and a Passat CC.

for that money , people would still buy the MX5

It would need to be much cheaper than an MX5 to make people consider it.
The last MGTF (or whatever they badged it) was too close to MX5 in price and lost.

IMHO

A 1.0 litre(ish) engine, (similar to the FOrd 3cyl, 130bhp unit), Front engine, RWD, VERY BASIC SPEC with the availbility of customer options.

Nothing fancy, exotic or complicated.
Light weight, skinny steels, tyres with sidewalls, manual roof.
Why front engined?
The F/TF were the best selling cars in their segment in the UK for years, and they had major issues. So a more fully developed one with the lighweight bombproof N series turbo would be a winner. The F/TF could have been compliant with the USA market but wasnt as Mayflower could not have built the projected number of bodyshells without major investment. Add those together and the right product would be huge hit. Mid or front engine is fine by me, but front wheel drive is a deal breaker.

Actually, thinking about it, I mean this:

...which is shown debuting in China (eventually). Doh!

No need for them to. MX5 already exists.

They need a cheap, light, gorgeous convertible.

Ideally with RWD.

No need to reinvent the wheel on this one.

And how well is the GT86 selling? I've never seen one.
Very well.

I couldnt get a test drive in a manual car because they were all sold, even the ones allocated to dealers have been given to customers.

I wonder how many they've imported then? I've still not seen one on the road.

Whatever they do, they want to get the team in who setup the ZS180. That thing is more fun than many of the 'sports cars' I've driven!

So British engineers and designers are searching for "new breed" of sports car.

Too late Alfa Romeo have beaten them to it.

That would've been a relatively pioneering concept in the late 70s. For 2014 it needs to be economical with a low tax band to sell in any volume.
Personally I'd like to see a continuation in the current trend of small, lightweight petrol engines- although for a sports car it'd have to be normally aspirated in my opinion. To pull of the small engine 'thang' it needs to be lightweight.

Follow the Dacia model, light cheap and fun.

If they could put that into a hot hatch, coupe or convertable I'm sure it would sell.

If they could keep the weight down and keep the engine small the MPG would be good and poss insurance pricing low....... well low-er

As someone has already said, it needs to be FUN + Cheap oh and FUN

I really like mid engined but my perfect range recipe would be:

Front engine rear wheel drive platform shared with ZT replacement, ZS replacement, hot hatch and a Morris Minor "cute" range and some form of crossover.

Three, four and six cylinder engines with or without turbos, petrol or diesel with as much commonality between the running gear as feasible.

Trouble is that's the thick end of a billion quid. Possibly more.

The normal model must be able to gain 50+mpg in petrol form, be relatively cheap to insure and fun. A reasonably cheap entry level (sub 15K) and massive options list to cream off the profits.

Failing that a little mid engined roadster borrowing heavily from the MG3 but if they really make it handle and it's very cheap (sub 12K) front wheel drive wouldn't kill it in their intended market.

FWD handling would be fine, but the styling limitations of making a two-seater car that small front engined would kill it, IMO. Just look at the competition - they're all ugly as sin, and not just because they all have folding metal roofs. The Mini Roadster probably gets closest to working, but it's still ugly as sin.

Are you sure you've come to the right site?

"uses a carbon fiber tub, front rear crash box, and hybrid rear frame with composed primarily of aluminium to keep its weight at 850 kilograms" for starters..........

And this provides what advantages to the buyers in this market? Besides, there's no way that car will ever happen with anything like the specs they originally touted.

A modern take on the Sprite/Midget, Honda S800/ Suzuki Cappuchino.

There is nothing else like it in the market place.

Light, fun and cheap. Stick with manual, the only thing class leading should be the chassis.
