" That perception remains today, despite recent efforts by Audi to change it by releasing first the 268bhp TT-S, and then the 335bhp TT-RS. While on paper, these models have looked like just the thing to fix the problem, in reality bothhave failed to hit the mark, and as a result, the TT is still lacking that edge it needs to bring it into the pantheon of truly sought-after drivers’ cars. "

A prime example of why Audi should fire whoever in their marketing department made the RS proposition fail (since they don't have the courage to fire themselves) and promote the people who contributed to the R8 to have full reign and influence on the next generation TT.

Be inspired, not mundane.

1000kg?

Maybe if they took the 1300kg two litre four cylinder front wheel drive car and completely stripped it they might get it down to, ooh, 1150kg, maybe a bit less. I expect such a car would fly out of the showrooms in much the same way that the Megane R26.R didn't.

Track day special, but with 4WD! The best 'track' orientated cars, like nearly all race cars, are either FWD or RWD. Better track drives found elsewhere I suspect.
Race cars are generally RWD and FWD because of the race regulations. If (more) race series catered for AWD you'd find most race cars became AWD and 'track' orientated cars would follow suit.

I would like to point out I am in no way a TT fan, not even close, however;

If any mainstream car company made a two seater sports coupe that looked good (as the TT does) weighed 1000kg, had communicative steering, handled well had a manual gearbox and say 300bhp from a lovely sounding characterful engine (5 cylinder ticks that box nicely) I think every car enthusiast would buy one!

The price would have to stay about the £45,000 mark though I think.

I don't think it's the 4WD system that's to blame for the steering feel and understeer in Audis.
And neither is it's engine placement. The Corrado VR6's engine is ahead of the front wheels and that has tonnes of steering feel.

I don't know the exact reasons why Audis have zero steering feedback but I suspect a lot of it is down to too much positive caster and probably not enough negative camber. Big Mercs like the CL500 are the same. Massive amounts of caster, absolutely zero steering feel.

Audi also usually attach the tie rods half way up the strut and the steering rack high up on the bulk head (instead of low down like most other cars), which probably doesn't help matters either.

I say good on them. It's a step in the right direction. Lighter, simpler, more rewarding cars. If Audi pull it off, others will follow.

Yawn. Add 100kg and swap that stupid 5 banger for the V8 with a couple of turbo's. Mount that in the rear and you now have a proper track day tool.

600Hp/600ft/lb should do the job and no one would not take it seriously. At the moment it's still a hair-dressers car.

I don't see how anyone can build a modern performance coupe for the road at 1000 Kg?

Depends on what you call "modern". The Ginetta G40R is 795kg. If you mean one with mass market appeal, probably not.

I can't see them making it 1000kg unless they drop the quattro? Would be great if they managed it though, certainly another step in the right direction that may further encourage them to take more weight saving measures in their other cars.
Not sure what they weigh but Audi have already dropped the quatto system for the GT4 and VLN racers - FWD only

I am afraid the basic architecture of the car is all wrong , they add great engines , four wheel drive etc etc but the car will never steer or handle well . It's a golf no more no less.

It can be done fairly easily; it's just that no-one wants to buy the result (as Lotus have found out). hehe

Well I say one thing for the TT RS, it has one hell of an engine, I drove my friends RS last year and it went like a rocket, and after a remap was just plain stupid fast for what it was, upset quit allot of BMW drivers if I remember correctly. If Audi could setup the car to drive more like the R8, I think they could be onto a winner.

Or rather, not enough people. And if your starting point is a vehicle architecture that must be shared with cars for everyman...

I don't care if it gets 1000bhp, I'd never drive an Audi TT. Infact, I'd never drive an Audi.

Steering feel is really the big let down of the TT. Had a 2.0 TFSI rental the other day. I just hated the car. Even the Golf 1.4 rental I had the other day was more fun to drive...

I'd be more interested in 1000kg with a smaller engine.

Don't make another Halo car for the range with power pushed in at GT3 spec.

Make something at the bottom of the range with more steering feel and add lightness in direct competition with the MX5-alikes of the world. That's where I'd be interested to see Audi try to compete.

Then share it with VW, Seat and Skoda.

I'd be VERY interested to see what Skoda would do with that recipe given their penchant for slightly off-the-wall design, basic function and low pricing.

As you're comments suggest - you seem well positioned to offer this target sales price...so all I would say to the original question is Nope and you can have a heck of alot more car(s) in your garage for this money...

All strength to Audi if there are ppl out ther to buy this concept for this money...

As long as it doesn't use a FWD/ viscous coupling system for the Quattro it might be quite interesting...
