But I have to say, the TT RS Plus is already a fairly epic piece of kit at 360PS. It's enough to burn off it's big brother the R8 in it's most basic form...
As the article intimates, it's nothing to do with its performance and all to do with its feel.
It may not be a very rewarding drive, but it's power is so usable it beats pretty much anything else on the road just in terms of "performance".
With the right skills yes, in a straight line yes.

Track day special, but with 4WD! The best 'track' orientated cars, like nearly all race cars, are either FWD or RWD. Better track drives found elsewhere I suspect.
Race cars are generally RWD and FWD because of the race regulations. If (more) race series catered for AWD you'd find most race cars became AWD and 'track' orientated cars would follow suit.
Four-wheel drive adds traction but not lateral grip, so only useful in the wet or/and on gravel. It does help the management of available grip/traction for the poor driver but professional drivers tend to rely on their skills.

Even WRC cars used to be beaten by the Group A front-drivers on dry tarmac, last time was Corse 1999 IIRC.

It's very difficult to draw conclusions about which configurations would be fastest on the track, because it depends so much on the technical regulations.

It will be too expensive.
It will still be a TT. [Even after you've tried to explain the differences to someone]

If they want light they can do what Lamborghini did and drop the dual clutch and go for a decent robotised single clutch or better yet a manual.

What better way to add some involvement... asking the driver to do the gears. Hmmm.

Also rwd only would make sense, put that engine in longitudinally.

There, saved 200kg doing that.

Carbon fibre panels where easy, maybe another 50kg?

Dump the pointless ish rear seats, another 40-50kg?

Some sound-deadening?

Super light weight wheels in a reasonable size (ie, not huge and heavy), probably another 20-30kg there?

Hmmm

If you look closely, it's just like a (£65k) Golf.

I would think it would be better to drop 500kg out of the r8 and stick in the new 5 pot, rather drop 350kg out of the tt and have to revise the entire chasis, powertrain, build materials, and have to charge r8 money for what will still likely be a worse car than the standard r8.

Aslong as it has an uprated haldex controller to erase the understeer, I cant see why not!
no matter how much power is thrown at it, thew solution is here, or very smart geometry changes.
weight may, just may make it light enough to be less understeery. Torsen setup is bloody heavy, i think the haldex setup is lighter.

If it actually tips the scales at 1000kgs I'll eat my own hair, it just won't happen, you can't shed half a tonne out of the car.

That said even if it comes in at 1200kgs (which is more realistic) and has 360ps it will be an absolute stormer, I expect they'll fiddle with the 4WD system to make it even more rear-bias as well.

Getting rid of the slightly naff Haldex system and giving it proper permanent AWD would be a start.

What we are all hoping for

RWD, manual gearbox, tuned 5 pot pushing out 400bhp, 1200kg weight, £45k

What we'll get

Haldex 4WD, Steptronic gearbox, 1500kgs, chintzy carbon fibre bodykit, £85k

All they need to do is give a TTRS to Lotus to make it handle with involvement and some balance. It'll win group tests galore, and therefore sell.

If I was lucky enough to have the sort of money to buy a car in that market e.g boxster, cayman R,lotus exige s.I wouldn't buy the audi you just can't really get excited about it in my mind.
I'd go for the lotus anyday from what I read in reviews it seems to be a pretty epic car and I loved the old one but the cayman is supposed to be brilliant is well so audi is going to have to make a great car to tempt potential owners from lotus/porsche.
But if they made something like the quattro it would be a whole new ball game and could be on to winner biggrin

Fairly interesting news, the 5 pot engine is a brilliant powerplant and the TTRS has always been a decent road car but always lacking that final nth degree of finesse to make it interesting enough for the enthusiast or to be driven on track. However if this gets the go ahead, I look forward to seeing what they can do, Audi CAN produce decent drivers cars, the R8 is brilliant but they seem few and far between these days so a hardcore TT might be the shot in the arm they need.

However two things, this car WILL NOT weigh 1000kgs or anywhere near it, not sure where that figure was plucked from but if Audi make this TT weigh 1000kgs I'll eat my hat.

Secondly the standard TTRS is a £50k car, this will be £70k+ if not more IMO.
This.

If it weighs 1000kg ill eat my arm.
