Can't understand it, but you can see the stuff these cars were designed for and won many times :- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfxU3IppE4E

A mate of mine who is a racing driver (ex British GT4 Champion) raves about them, says they are an absolute hoot. He is a bit weird and sees a poorly handling car as a challenge, so suggest you have a go yourself before you purchase. I have always fancied one, so am off to do a search... also, just looked at a late 90's C43 AMG which some fool has crammed the 5.5 V8 into... I love stupid cars...
I never owned one, but did tool around in one that was a trade-in during my years in car sales.
On road handling was nothing special, nor were it's off-road capabilities by comparison to cheaper options, but.... ( and it's a big one ) these things are stupidly fun.
The look on peoples faces as you blast away from the lights, or the sound they make with a bit of tweaking just seems so out of place it's almost comical.
Only downside is rarity. Parts can be expensive and hard to find.
I'd looked into the running costs if i was going buy the one i was driving at the time, and for a then 23 year old ( in 2004 ) it worked out cheaper to buy, run, insure and maintain than a similarly priced VW golf gti.......... IF nothing went wrong.
It's the IF that stopped me.

Had one of these, TOTALLY different to a regular SWB Shogun / Pajero (rear suspension for a start)
Tiptronic gearbox wasn`t that awful but a manual one would have transformed it.
Turn in was a bit unnervingly sharp and it felt pretty tall but it did have a lot of grip and held on very well, I always felt that I had failed with it though because I never got it sideways on dry tarmac!
Despite the bodywork giving the game away it did surprise lots of people when they say the number plate in their rear mirror!
They were £40k originally for the "UK" version but I didn`t pay anything like that!

It's a Mitsubishi RVR.What iS it? (Sorry for being ignorant!)
Wanted one since finding them on the lancer register when I was tooling around in an evo 2. I could be wrong but I seem to recall the thirst as being something that wipes the floor with all but the top end of car ownership. Seem to have clawed onto their values in that time as well, though as has been said, why is anyones guess.
