RE: New Cayman toughens up

"electro-hydraulic steering"... Next!
If it is electro-hydraulic that's surprisingly good news as it would be a conventional hydraulic rack driven by an electric motor rather than a belt driven pump. Unfortunately it's overwhelmingly likely that it's the full electric (electro-mechanical) system as per 991 and 981.
Porsche do have an electro-hydraulic suspension system for limiting roll in the corners, unfortunately looks like there's nothing hydraulic in the steering.
Looks great, I think Porsche are doing a great job with their cars at the moment. My only issue with this is a fake rear strut brace? WTF is that all about, if you are putting something across the boot that hinders access and what can be fit in it then at least it should be functional.

Definitely a visual improvement over the old one, although I still can't like the back (of this, or indeed any recent Porsche).
This and the Boxster now have looks getting towards the talent of the drive. Those sculpted rear side vents really give it a whiff of supercar. I like very much
I would have the equivalent Boxster instead though, no question

This looks promising, and I'm sure they'll be good reviews, but I can't help thinking - why would I buy this, and not a Boxster? In the Boxster, if you want you can drop the roof. I'd like to know what the Cayman will/can offer that the Boxster does not (beyond the obvious chassis rigidity comments).

That's a shame, I thought that was perhaps the best design feature of the old one that really separated it from the design of the other cars in the range.
It sort of made it look hunkered down and purposeful. Especially with the R model. That's a shame, I thought that was perhaps the best design feature of the old one that really separated it from the design of the other cars in the range.

Looks and the feeling of security driving a proper tin top. I'm really not sure and I say that as a fan of the Cayman. Some of the angles, the rear 3/4 shot that was in the OPC promo mail I got tonight made it look lovely but that last shot, the angles are all over the place. The most beautiful cars have lines that flow and I don't get that from these pictures. Maybe it has to be seen in the metal but I would have hoped that Porsche would have managed to use the best shots in their press releases.
I don't get all the negativity and criticism of Porsche's design department though. It's not like their evolutionary design approach is a surprise. We all know their product portfolio and protection of the 911 nameplate. The sneering is just boring and lazy. If we're going to pick on a design team, I'd like to nominate the team behind the Nissan Puke. They have a lot to answer for with that abomination.
