Fraser, use flange sealer on the cam box to head face and special rubber gaskets for the cam covers! Did this to my Jensen 10 years ago and it's never leaked a drop!

Other tip, is don't fill with oil right away, leave for 24 hrs before putting oil in, so no oil sits over the fresh seal.

Mine never leaked using this method.

Also bend the gaskets to shape first, then apply sealer to one side and "glue" to the cover using the carrier as a former, then when that has cured do the second side sealing the cover onto the carrier. Use fresh Selocs every time and only torque them once.

I remember getting a lift to school in a friend's dad's Lotus Sunbeam Cheetah, absolutely amazing thing that was. He chucked it around the twisties like it was his last day on Earth. Good times.

Same colours as my old one. I don't suppose anyone knows if DAC 91Y is still alive? Happy memories

When did you own '91Y...?

If you owned it back in Sept 1988, then we've met many years ago smile

I took this photo of 4 x DAC's (incl 91Y) at a Club Lotus Sprint at North Weald airfield in Essex back in Sept 1988.

My old car (71Y) is on the far left,

A very nice car.
Greater Manchester Police used Sunbeam Lotus on the X cars squad, think in the late 70' or early 80's?
Don't think they were in Lotus colours, I can remember a dark green one. Don't know if anyone can add further?

Just Googled.

I wonder if this was the same car?

Correct.

6 cars were ordered, two in white, two in green and two in red (memory isn't what it was, so a little hazy that the 3rd colour was red, but I think it was)

Only 5 cars were delivered to GM Police for some reason, with one of the green ones being sold on by Talbot to a member of the public, and it surfaced in the owners club soon after the club was formed, and as far as I'm aware it exists. I've got a photo of it somewhere, that I took at a car show that was attended by SLOC, back in the early 1990's.

I don't believe any of the other 5 x GM Police cars have survived.

Nice write-up Fraser.

GMP cars were all different colours, not two of each. The green car that you recall, Graham, is NFG, a car that was never delivered to the police but still left the factory in green.

The Cheetah was not a Lotus, it was a special sold by Stag Hill Motors using a 2-litre "Brazilian" engine. It pre-dated the Sunbeam Lotus and became pretty much redundant when the Lotus was released.

I take it more up to date info is known about them now from the early days when I was around...?

They must have ordered two green ones though, as NFG was ordered but never delivered, and a green one was delivered...?

I know one of them was definately white (or was it Jonquil?) as that's the one that famously appears in that BBC/ITV News clip when being used as an escort car to a visit by PofW and then Lady Di to Manchester.

They can be clearly identified from production records, plus the GMP museum have photos of the cars lined up:

I used to own 2 of the very last and very rare 'Avon' model Lotus sunbeams. There was originally meant to be a limited edition of 150 of them made and you were able to chose your own personal build number from 1-150, but if fact only 57 were ever produced.(I owned number 33 and 99)The number plates matched the build number of the car too with most Avons having a 'DDU' prefix plus the car number, mine was DDU 99Y. They were mechanically identical but the main differences was the paintwork which was 2 tone blue with thin red pinstripe with the cars number painted discreetly beside the door mirror in red. Also the interior was given a makeover with the seats being covered in 'luxurious' blue velour with again the red pinstripe to match.Blue carpets finished off the inside. The wheels were also picked out in dark blue.
An absolutely fantastic car and by far the most fun I've had in any car, so much so I kept no.33 for 9 years! In its day there was nothing near it in its class and I wish I'd kept one of them.
