For someone who has never much had the opportunities to experience real exoticar, I give you the humble Rover V8. Rarely have I shed a tear for the decommission of an engine. Seemingly infinite useage and a decent dab of tuneability. Of course they could be found in TVR's but I think it's rightful home was the SD1 Vitesse. It suited it and that is half the job of a decent engine - for it to suit it's bearer and, ultimately, it's owner. I'll take the mongrel Rover.... and decent tunnel
TVR speed 12 hold some records for powerrrrr. Its on wiki somewhere.
Merlin and its complicated Sabre counterpart.
RS4 V6 twin turbo. You could say it was 10 years ahead of its time and hugely tunable.
The AMG lump in the F1. 243mph from a normally aspirated engine.
Afla V6. if not the best it looks amazing
Renault Gordini 1.5l turbo F1 engine 1300BHP from 1.5 L
Bikey stuff...
Norton Rotary
Ducati Teststretta
Honda V4

Has to be a Rolls Royce Merlin, not a car engine I know (and John Dodds 'The Beast' had a Meteor so that doesn't count!)
Even just hearing one start is a magical experience.
+1: the greatest noise ever made by an infernal combustion device.Even just hearing one start is a magical experience.
More prosaically, the Ferrari-derived V8 as used by Maserati. Real hair-raising stuff - angry sabretooth at bay...

Erm, easy one this, I love most internal combustion engines, and has been mentioned in the thread
the Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 seems to be a firm favourite doesn't it?
Well I have to disagree! for the full effect you need two Merlins!
Ladies and Gentlemen, here endeth the thread.......

Agreed. There really is no point in carrying on the discussion. When I was a student at York, we'd often get the Battle of Britain flight practising over the lake - to be woken up on a Sunday morning by seven Merlins in formation was one of the great experiences - even for a student with a hangover!the Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 seems to be a firm favourite doesn't it?

I've got a 996 and a Testastretta in my garage and have to say that the 996 has the more characterful sound.Merlin and its complicated Sabre counterpart.

There is something about the supercharged V8 in the Challenger in Vanishing Point that I love....
That's not supercharged, it's just a naturally-aspirated Hemi V8. On the subject of fantastic engine notes though, the GT390 Mustang from Bullitt sounded fantastic, but the best sound I've ever heard (in the car) was a hand-rebuilt Ferrari 308 (carburetor model).Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
