I've got one of these. The noise at 5k rpm is one of my favourite of all sounds.

Like the Maser V8 and Ducati V twin.

Agree, Ducati V has a lovely note, have a nice straight five in RS2, that has a crisp note very different, long time ago had a flat note V twin, 998cc Vincent that fired once every lampost -
Engines express their personalities through the various exhaust notes.

straight five by audi, porsche modified.......

Love the straight 5 as well. Dad had an 850 T5, sounded lovely.

BRM V16 and usual Ferrari 12 cyl suspects also favourites. Testarossa was really sweet - much more than Diablo I drove.

Reciprocating engines are directly analogous to wind instruments oscillating gas at different frequencies down tubes of varying lengths and materials. Therefore a bad sounding engine is like a bad instrument - no use. This sounds dramatic, but we'll mourn them when they're gone.
