A sorted TVR speed six 4l has to be up there, it doesn't have soul it has an entire personality, off days good days etc.
Any capacity Speed Six has so much character its probably got multiple personality disorder. Every time you turn the key you wonder which one you're going to get. And then there's the sound ... stunning. Not cheap to run, but worth it.Sorry, has to be any big V8 with a 90degree crank with a fruity exhaust on it. Bullet sound track ? Or goto YouTube, and find the Marauder 50' power boat with 3 supercharged 1075hp V8's just ticking over !!!

Hmmmm, will dish out some love for the straight six also. Just listen to the cultured note from 0:50 onwards

[geek mode on] The engine in the SLS is actually the M159 - when compared to the standard M156 AMG engine, the SLS's M159 engine includes an all-new intake system, reworked valve train and camshafts, the use of flow-optimised tubular steel headers and dethrottling of the exhaust system. The engine also utilizes a dry-sump lubrication system to lower the center of gravity of the car.[geek mode off]
I love mine!

Any of us who grew up in the UK and have a musical ear will have to place the Rover v8 near the top of the list. The sound still turns my head whenever a Disco or classic RR rumbles past. So evocative and musical. And then when you get a decent exhaust on one, wow.
And the old Triumph straight six found in the 2000/2500/Vitesse/GT6 sounds amazing.
And I'll never forget the music from an 1987 BMW 528i on a spirited run through the country lanes around Berkshire.

my vote would be for the busso V6 that went into Alfa Romeos from the late 70's up until a few years back, the flat 12 from the porshce 917 and the BMW straight six M20 from E21/E30 BMW 3 series and E21 E28 and E34 5 series. Oh and the Lycoming 0-320 flat six aero engine, which has never yet let me down once aloft.
If you want to hear engines go to the Wilton Supercar day. Had the privelege to stand by the following when they did the "sound off" -
"Race tuned" Viper V10 - hard as nails, very mechanical
Ferrari 355 v8 with a aftermarket exhaust - that thing just sings
Cobra 428 v8 - the rumble
Others of note -
Top Fuel V8 - hold on to your guts, feel the noise
BRM v16 1.5l supercharged - painful but worth it
As for road cars my favourite has to be the McMerc SLR supercharged v8 with the side exhausts, sounds like a road going spitfire (airplane that is).
