At the lower end:

Austin A-Series. Great character.

Civic Type R - allied to a great box.

Yank ohv V8s - just have that classic rumble.

Another vote for the current 4.7l V8 from Maserati. Sadly, the current Granturismo Sport is probably the final evolution before the downsizing craze kills it off.

If we are allowed to depart from roadcars, it has to be the little 1.5l V16 from BRM. Buggers to set up properly, but when they are - just, wow.

Dad used to have a 02' Civic Type R. A car he bought due to driving my uncles DC2 Integra Type R (which he still has), and my mam has a 04' Accord Type S.

And the VTEC engines in my opinion and my dad's opinion (he has since owned a scooby and now a GT86) are comfortably the best engines ever. I love the revvy nature of them, the way the power is delivered. The fact that they prove that 1000000bhp isn't needed to have fun!

(No I don't have a car yet even though I am now 20 due to insurance but I have my heart set on a DC2 Integra when I can afford one)

Almost all cars with dull engines are just boring dull cars to start with anyway !

And yes I like my K20 V-Tec :-)

My happiest miles have all been getting pulled along by a nicely tuned Ford Crossflow.

1700, 244 cam, twin weber 40s, K&Ns and a nice fruity exhaust. BARP.

Alfa 'Busso' V6 for me too. I am slightly biased though - I've had 9 of them in various forms over the years.

Ford BDA on WOT at 7000 RPM. A noise to die for.

Any Alfa Romeo V6 pre 2005 (Busso engine)

Lamborghini V12 on carbs.

Hard for modern engines to have soul when they are silenced and strangled in the name of regulations.

Here is my list:
1) Lamborghini V12 Countach, Diablo and Murcielago
2) BMW S85B50 V10 M5 and M6
3) Rover V8 5.0 TVR Griffith
4) BMW s54 E46 M3

Just looking back at my list tells me the more cylinders the better, imo.

Great blog. A little off the cuff, but I love the v8 3.0 in my stag, so long as it isn't overheating wink

I'll always be a sucker for a Twin Carb 1275cc A-Series tucked up against the bulkhead in an original Cooper S!
