I used to own an S2000 and yes the engine is rather unique, although I must say not my choice if picking one to love.

I now have a Maserati 4200 Spyder and must say the 400bhp 4.2 V8 in it is rather lovely, both to look at and the sound. Biased though, I'll hold my hands up!

Erm, easy one this, I love most internal combustion engines, and has been mentioned in the thread
the Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 seems to be a firm favourite doesn't it?

Well I have to disagree! for the full effect you need two Merlins!

Ladies and Gentlemen, here endeth the thread.......

A couple of choice Peugeot engines from me:

Mi16 1.9 16V in a 205 GTi coming 'on cam' at 4K then screaming its way to 7.4K. Plus a sexy exhaust manifold to boot.

106 Rallye 1.3 8V - having to work for a living and sounding mighty fine doing so. Downsides - looks like any other plain Jane TU series engine on the outside. As they say it is what is in the inside that counts!!

And a What!? sound - VAG's 1.8T. Diesel sounding start up and only a hint of wastegate flutter every blue moon if on/off throttle quickly. Effective but dull.

As others have said, Rolls Royce Merlin. Nothing else comes close.

If not restricted to car engines, definitely the best sounding yes///

I really enjoy the venerable old a series in my mini , just something about it gets me excited

But for modern engines i find it hard to beat fiat and Alfa , dying for a go in a twin air

The best part of my Vauxhall Astra Gte's were the 16 valve redtop's , pull in every gear hard and had a great sound.

Love the Type R vtec unit for it's mechanical thrashiness.

And apart from that , the c63 Safety car at this years Abu Dhabi Grand Prix sounded nearly as loud as the F1 cars.

Sorry for the shamless plug about the F1.......gerrit up ye!

For sounds and looks, Jaguar 3.4 & 3.8 six on SU carbs (Mk2, XK120-150, E type, big saloons), Jaguar V8 in recent XKs

For sounds 911 aircooled flat 6!

Boxer engine - As already mentioned has to be the Subaru STi engine, not this new rubbish but the 2 litre out of a Type R\RA circa 1999. Lovely distinctive burble, great power and a turbo engine that could rev to 8000rpm in the 90's, who'd have believed it? It might not be as efficient, have as much low down torque, lag blah blah blah but it has 10 times the character than any of the diesel-alike turbo engines today.

4 pot - Has to be the S2000 engine, 9000rpm in a road car is just insane and yes it has more than enough torque, if you know how to drive properly! wink

V6 - Has to be the Alfa "busso" V6, lovely sound, great grunt and even lovelier to look at, that gleaming metal pipework was a work of art. Why have manufacturers lost the art of making an engine look good? They hide them under swathes of plastic now which is rubbish

Straight 6 - Ohh toss up between the fantastic engine in the E46 M3 and the RB26 in the R32-R34 Nissan Skylone GTR's. The S54 on the Beemer offered up razor sharp throttle response and the noise in CSL form was unbelievable. The RB26 wasn't as razor sharp due to having two turbo's strapped to it but what it lacks in throttle response it more than makes up for in outright shove and tune-ability as this engine is probably one of the most often tuned engines in the world, 1000bhp? Yep no problem. The noise and revs available from this turbo'd lump were also unbelievable.

V8 - Has to be the S62 out of the E39 M5, I know there are probably better engines which have been released since and the Americans have always been good at making decent ones but this was where the love of V8's started for me. 400bhp, lovely shove and an engine note which told you it meant business.

V10 - Hmm again tough choice, LFA or Carrera GT? Both IMO are absolutely fantastic, more than enough power and THE best noise makers in the business IMO. These two are probably my 2 favourite engines of all time and I actually prefer this configuration to the V12's. Don't make me choose between these two though, it's not fair.

V12 - Going to have to go with a classic on this one, the engine from the Countach. It might seem agricultural compared to modern engines but it has soo much character. 12 cylinders+carbs=one of the best engine noises ever. If you still have any doubts, just watch the beginning of Cannonball Run and you'll be converted.

Honourable mention to the V12 in the Macca F1 too, that engine is just sublime.

What I've noticed is that all of these engines might not have the best power although non are shabby, they might not be the most efficient but they all have character. Noise, revs and looks are the most important factors to me in an exciting car engine and much more important than how much Co2 a car produces or how much torque it can produce at 1000rpm. It's a shame manufacturers seem to have all but forgotten or been legislated out of that way of thinking.

No one mentioned the TVR AJP8 yet?

It brilliant for its sheer brutality!

BRUTAL is the only way to describe it, its throttle response, low down toque, crazy cams all make it stupid, brutal (again) & great!

Very different to the effortless, smooth, refined speed you get from a Porsche C4S.

Both great in different ways.

Havnt really driven much else for long enough to comment on it.....

although my old GTR was awesome and sounded great, the K20 vtec sounds fantastic when in vtec....a simple "sporty" filter opens the sound up and it really screams, fantastic.

m3 csl, tvr cerbera and a 458 would also get my vote as well.

ooohh.. forgot, mclaren SLR ....saw and heard one on holiday a few years back...unbelievable sound.

I'm loving the 13B in my RX-7. Just turning the key, the way it whooshes into life is totally different from anything else, then sits there at cold idle, sending the odd shudder through the car as it misfires. Once warm, it is totally smooth with an endless desire to rev, picking up strongly from under 3k and then pulling with seamless smooth urge until the warning beeper butts in at 7k, to remind me to change up. There is no sense of 'that's fast enough' or increasing harshness as speed builds, just the desire to go ever faster. While it doesn't howl like an opera singer, it is still very different and characterful.

Any Lambo V12 should automatically be entered here IMO, but especially my mate Reeso's Murci. Idling, pootling, or full-bore upshift, it's a bomb on wheels. Love it thumbup

  • Honda K20, click the link (wikipedia) to see variants and the cars it was used in (CTR's, ITR's and many more).
  • engine in the Honda RA272 1960's F1 car (1500cc, V12, 48 valves). How can such a small car make such an amazing, insanely loud noise :-)

Not driven one either unfortunately but have heard a few in real life being given the beans, one standard and one with a tubi. I actually preferred the one with the standard exhaust as you could hear more of the engines melody. The you tube clips do not lie though, possibly THE best sounding car of all time.

At the moment, a couple of my cars have the best engines I've ever owned..... the 5-pot in my fettled Focus RS is a complete gem. Every time I hit the loud pedal it makes me laugh out loud - not only is it punching above it's weight it sounds fantastic.

On a more weak-at-the-knees level, the LS3 in my Ultima can't be beaten IMO. With it's carbon intake and custom exhaust, I start it up, just to listen to it reverberating in the garage. Surely that's what a good engine should make you want to do? Here's a video of it being run not long after install: LS3 Video

And a few gratuitous pics...

got to go some to beat a Mustang - and that's the P51 wink

onto cars... I'll grant you that the TVRs sound good BUT for me it has to be a Yankee V8 - be it a Hemi (ok a little biased!), a supercharged 5.4 Ford Lightning or a SBC.

Another real contender has to be the 5 cylinder Quattro lump - seeing those at full chat on the RAC was awesome
