Gutted my For sale ad wasn't listed in this piece its even better value than the 2002!

I would love a CS 98% of the CSL for 60% of the price and a newer car aswell.
As a CSL owner I laughed at this. 98% not a chance.

I'd take a CS over a CSL even if they were the same price. The idea of an automatic M3 just seems wrong to me and it's not even a particularly good automatic if it's the same as the DSG they put in the other M3s of that era.

Ha I'm trying to sell a normal e46 M3 not a CS.

I will revise my 98% to 95% but I am sticking to that. As a car the CS is 95% of a CSL.

The DCT didn't appear in the M3 until the E9X series.

SMG is an automated manual with a single clutch & can be far more violent than DSG/DCT 'boxes.

I'll never forget the savagery of the shifts in my pal's SMG cabrio, with the 'box set to S6...

I love the BMW M3 (E46) and all its derivatives. I am blessed to have a BMW M3 CS Coupe with BMW Manual Gearbox. May 2006 build. October 2006 registered. 2 owners from new before me. 33500 miles. The BMW I have always wanted .... Well this and a M3 CSL and a 325i Sport (E30) :-)

Being pedantic it's not an automatic but a sequential manual with an automatic mode (that is horrible!). TBH the SMG box isnt that bad. Around town and at slow speeds it is a bit clunky but on track or when driving hard on the road it makes sense. You only need to experience an SMG downshift from high rpm in a CSL to be slightly convinced of its worth

I think the mistake here is to view SMG as an automatic. Primarily, it isn't. It does have an automatic function which, I would agree, is woeful. But to view is as an automatic is to miss out on its benefits.

The SMG box is a delight on the open road, in flappy paddle manual mode. I took my SMG'd CS down through France and Spain and it was a complete joy on fast flowing country roads.

But as above, if I had another it would be manual.

And then everyone moans that the DCT is too clinical instead, and wants the SMG. Just read the F10 M5 thread!

I'll ignore your comments about it being an automatic as I'm not going to bite. However the whole point of the CSL is to make it as fast and track orientated as possible which means SMG is better. I prefer swapping cogs myself too but it wouldn't put me off a CSL if I had the money.

Sorry yes, I meant the SMG. Not good on BMW terminology.

Still each to their own. I know some people like these 'boxes. I'm just glad the M3 was available with both so if I ever need four seats I can buy one. smile

What a beautifull car the E46 M3's are though. A definate future classic for sure.
I always thought that the CS came with that rear spoiler (which I don't like) the one featured doesn't though, was it optional?

That Blue colour is gorgeous though!

The nasty rear window spoiler thing is the most offensive.
I don't like the add ons either - what does that badge on the steering wheel say ? I can't make it out.

Would never buy one, simply for the fact they are mainly driven by rude boy bellends.

I think this is what confuses me; for me "fast" and "track orientated" are completely unrelated. A track is exactly where I want the most interaction from a car; I don't give a damn how fast I'm going unless I'm actually racing. If I was buying a track car I wouldn't even want strong syncromeshes, let alone an automated box.

Each to their own, though. smile

But if you buy a good one, its not far off free motoring, you'll get back pretty much what you pay for it. It's the perfect car biggrin
