RE: BMW 4 Series coupe leaked

The shape is classic, although on a closer looks its full of unnecessary details. The same fault as with many recent BMWs
Maybe. It is a criticism that is always aimed at BMW however a lot of people believe this is because they are styled before their time which if you compare their models to the equivalant german rivals they still look fresh whereas Merc & Audi date very quickly. Surely the Z4 should be compared to the second generation SLK and TT; it's a much newer design than the two posted?
Personally, I'd say the Merc and Audi are both much better looking too - the Z4 is one of the uglier sports cars of recent times by my eye.
I agree about the 5-series though - the only one of the Bangle era designs that I like. Although having said that, the face-lifted E-class gives it a run for its money in terms of looks, as does the next generation A6 with which it overlapped at the other end of the production run.

Now I'm a terribly BIG fan of the Bavarians (I'm sure my name doesn't give that away lol), but does anybody else think that top picture looks like an A5?
Nope (And I really don't like the A5 )Looks like a baby 6 to me, which I see as a good thing.
I'm sure, though, that this will be quite a lot more expensive than the equivalent 3...

Indeed, and now they aren't, but it sounds like they may be again in 2014ish.
This time hopefully they can design their own platform from the ground up, rather than modifying a FWD Ford one.
Agreed, but a lot of the mainstream manufacturers seem to be sharing/modifying platforms these days unfortunatelyThis time hopefully they can design their own platform from the ground up, rather than modifying a FWD Ford one.

Alpina D4?, where do I sign?
You're my kind of guy Love the D3, waiting for the D3 F30/31, never thought of a D4... That would make a nice daily driver.Wonder how much of a price increase the 4-series coupe will be over the outgoing E92 coupe..? That's the interesting question...

Jaguar were in this segment = X-Type (granted not a coupe but it was their midsize offering all the same)
That is not the same segment, that was a rival to the 3-series saloon and A4 etcIt's all the same segment just different body shapes.
Joking (earlier in the thread) aside, I love it. The only thing that's bugging me is the way the nose appears to droop*. It looks like the bonnet is horizontal until the quarter nearest the nose, where it sags (for lack of a better expression). I'd have much preferred a consistent taper from the windscreen to the nose.

I suspect that's not possible unless they ditch the straight-6s because of the modern bonnet clearance requirements. They could have gone for a higher nose, which would have looked less bulbous but would also have looked less sleek. Hellbound said:
You've lost your mind. Ask anyone's GF/wife/mother to choose between a new, German sports coupe or an old E36 coupe and they'll obviously choose the new car! It's a no brainer. I've seen so many dodgy E36's lately I'm not really drawn to them anymore. And this is from someone who's had 3 and my younger brother has a 328i coupe. His friends have E36 coupes too. Image wise, it's not the best look and I now associate them with 19yos trying to look cool.
Mh, OK. I should have explained it better. Ask them what shape they prefer, and if they know a bit about cars add "when it was new". The demoiselles I frequent all hate exagerrated "over-stated" styling. And that 4rer certainly looks like an example of a first rate poseur mobile. Hellbound said:
Revolting? Really? I fail to see how anyone sane could be revolted or disgusted by this car. It's quite ridiculous to even react in such an extreme way to something so inconsequential.
A couple of years from now we'll all be lauding the handling magnificance of the M4 and M2. Mark my ruddy words!
I'd have to drive one to comment on the handling. No doubt it will be (comparatively) good, I have some faith with BMW in that respect. Same as for any engine from the Motorenwerke. A couple of years from now we'll all be lauding the handling magnificance of the M4 and M2. Mark my ruddy words!
But the looks. "Revolting" might seem over the top, but I'm just getting frustrated with BMW styling. Perhaps that's why I'm reacting so strongly. From the E9 on to the mid 90ies stuff I loved the styling, with the E38 as a late highlite IMO. Could not afford one back then. Now that I can, they all look §$!§Ü*&.
