nice looking car but of what little i know about them, top gear Isle of Man test showed all i needed to see... too much computer power, not enough traction= no where near as fast as a 911 3.8s 997 = what is the point ...
it does look good, but its not special enough nor rare enough to put away, liek for example the z8...
I grant you it has proper rear seats and is more of a gt than a 911 but running costs are high...

I've always wanted to put that S85 in a 2002tti with M3's manual six-speed. There are few E30s with this engine and six-speed. But, no 2002tti...

Colleague had one. Never understood it - the engine doesn't suit the car. Ones for racing, the others a big GT. Would have thought that a big lazy V8 would be a better match, like this for example

less money and probably less likely to go wrong/cost lots.

great bit of technology the V10 engine but what a pig ugly car, 6 series was and is the very ugly sister, the 3 and 5 sereies were also no lookers and killed it for me after the E46 shape

You are probably absolutely right but I've been in a 650i and while it's a competent GT, it's not a very exciting car at all. Perhaps this is how GT's should be, competent but efficiently boring?

Me personally I definitely prefer the more frantic nature of the V10 but then I guess we on PH are a weird bunch, probably proven by the fact that many non ph-ers didn't get on with the V10 at all hence the move to a lazy twin turbo V8 in the new one. Funnily enough though I did think the V8 in the E39 M5 was superb so maybe it's less about the configuration of the engine and more to do with it's character?

How drive able is this car ?

How does it compare to a E30 with the S54 in terms of

Drag race (does the V10 have worse traction)
Drive ability in town / country roads / motorway / wet / dry
Fuel
U must have had loads of races against cars thinking you are just a 316i ?
Drifting going sideways
Reliability report so far

Thanks very much :-)

I've always wanted to put one of the v10's in the bay of a M Coupé. That thing would blow the doors off everything. If someone has made one, I want to know.

Good reason why it has depreciated so much

Always loved the engines in these things, shame about the gearbox... Also not owning my own fuel refinary did give me pause.

So it looks horrid, drinks fuel, is quick but in real world pointless, depreciates like a burning zepplin, is likely to go wrong and costs a fortune to fix.
You are right on all counts. But there is something quite wonderful about it beyond it being one of the last of the big NA engined screamers.

635d for me please. Meaty six pot sound, loads of low down torque, 40 mpg and 550 miles plus on a tank.

I'd rather drive in it once and enjoy the experience, but would not wish to own it.

How bad are these things on fuel? I don't do much mileage but I have heard massive discrepancies on mpg figures bandied about. 20-22mpg would be bearable but I've also heard low teens quoted quite often too which would get annoying despite doing low mileage as you'd constantly be stopping at the petrol station, feeding the tax man so what's the truth of it? (can you tell I'm desperately trying to justify a V10 as my next car?)

That sounds far too sensible.

Mine did 21-22mpg overall in the time I owned it with a fair bit of motorway and fast a road.

Pottering around town, or driving it hard will see mid teens at best.

I suppose that's really not that bad considering the weight and performance of the thing.

not at all. Just the size of the tank - not much more than 250, 300 miles at a push.

I wonder why they didn't fit a bigger tank? Surely they can't have been short of space?
