How bad are these things on fuel? I don't do much mileage but I have heard massive discrepancies on mpg figures bandied about. 20-22mpg would be bearable but I've also heard low teens quoted quite often too which would get annoying despite doing low mileage as you'd constantly be stopping at the petrol station, feeding the tax man so what's the truth of it? (can you tell I'm desperately trying to justify a V10 as my next car?)
Mine did 21-22mpg overall in the time I owned it with a fair bit of motorway and fast a road.

Pottering around town, or driving it hard will see mid teens at best.
Hmm I live in London suburbs so a lot of pottering around town which won't be great then. I guess the V10 would also be wasted in that kind of environment bar the occasional weekend trip away.

Shame, I'm still trying to find that elusive car which will do both the mundane stuff like ferrying the family to the shops but which also has the ability to set my hair on fire on demand. I thought the M5\M6 would be in with a shout of fulfilling that dual personality role but it's looking more and more like I'll need to go down the two car route (something that I am a bit loath to do tbh)

mine averaged 19mpg which was mainly fast M way driving. really not the best around town but now quite as bad as people make out. you have to drive with the pedals though, the autobox in drive is useless.

I'll get shot down for this but....

The car I replaced the M6 was a 640d M (lease not purchase).

In the real world it is just as fast as the M6, and probably the performance is more accessible more easily. It is happy to potter, and surprisingly happy to be chucked about. Of course I am not pretending it is a sports car, but as a real world daily driver to do long motorways on, as well as potter in traffic it is great. I have a few serious "anti-black stuff" friends with some pretty high performance exotica and they have been blown away by the performance. It doesnt even sound too bad. I'm averaging 40mpg, and can get 700 miles out of a tank if I tickle it. I should caveat that I have a Chim in the garage for weekends too....

Why not have a E39 M5 or at a family squeeze a E46 M3 or E90 M3 or to go further the very rare E36 M3 Evolution Saloon and keep the change to spend on another toy should you wish :-) ?

I always fancied the M6, but kids meant I had to opt for the E60 M5 instead. I miss it. I miss it loads. But running a car like that as a daily in this climate, with fuel prices the way they are, it just felt irresponsible to continue owning it. Money can be better utilised at this time. IMO, I had the best colour combo; Interlagos Blue, black interior, M6 alloys.. Oh, and had it deresticted and ECU remap biggrin

Just local city driving and my OBC is reading 14.6mpg in my M5, wouldn't expect much difference in the M6, £25 gets me about 50 miles frown

While I am well aware of the brilliant all round capability of the BMW diesel engines, they just don't excite me. My car has to be a toy 20% of the time and a family wagon for the rest and a diesel just wouldn't do it for me for that 20% I'm afraid. Even my 335i doesn't feel special enough at times which is why an M car was the next logical progression but as another poster said, it seems irresponsible to run a V10 car as a town car in these times.

I'd consider an M3 as they also have that dual personality\all round capability but the coupe isn't really practical enough and I don't really like the looks of the 4 door. It's that eternal dilemma that PH'ers face, balancing the fun factor vs the practicalities of life. The M car should be ideal in that role but the V10 is just a tad too comproimised IMO which is a shame as I think it's cracking motor. I guess it's that kind of thinking though that has led to the now slightly anodyne M5\M6 so maybe we get what we deserve? smile

I've always wanted to put one of the v10's in the bay of a M Coupé. That thing would blow the doors off everything. If someone has made one, I want to know.
It has been done...

24k is far too much for a M6 ,have a look on ebay, 2006, all extras 43,000 £19k or a higher mileage £16,999 but not best colour (red)and awfull interior, prefer M5 myself have your pick for £15,k ,dont like rear of 5 series though was tempted by 530/535 D now a 2005 in black/black leather can be had for around 6-7k

Owned mine for almost 2 years.. Mostly town driving (wife's daily) and my heavy foot at the weekends. Average mpg when I sold it was 12.4

635d for me please. Meaty six pot sound, loads of low down torque, 40 mpg and 550 miles plus on a tank.
Only downside is falling asleep at the wheel through sheer boredom wink - I'm an ex 535D owner. People who trot out the old cliche that a 535/540D is like an E60 M5 - obviously never managed to make it past 6k rpm when all hell breaks loose.

That's probably about right, unless you are travelling at 2000 rpm on the highway.

My advice is do it!

I went through this same thought process last year. Needed a family wagon but also something that was properly quick when I was on my own. I'd previously owned an e39 M5 and e36 and e46 M3's, so tried the e92 m3, but after the e60 m5 it just felt a bit underwhelming without the proper, holy f***, hold on tight performance that the M5 is capable of. Also test drove the XFR, much more flexible engine, but power delivery just felt a bit lazy and setup a bit soft, similarly the C63. There are lots of times when being a 535D is probably the better all-rounder, but we're all a long time dead and the visceral experience of gunning the M5 at full chat is just an experience that few other cars can match. Not a get in and drive quick kind of car but when you get it right.............

Oh, and i'm averaging 17.2mpg after 14 months.

I used to deliver a lot of stuff to a small, innocuous bungalow - occupied by an elderly couple - set on the edge of a new development.

In their garage - from date of launch - was a Silver M6. It struck me as an odd choice for them - the rear seats had a few toys scattered across them, the car was always gleaming but that carbon roof was at-odds with what I'd have expected for them.

But if you ever got stuck behind it - you were in for a slow drive - I swear I never saw it top 40!!

That's what 'M' cars are now - y'see - they're just "the most expensive one" or "the one with all the trinkets". I doubt this couple have a clue what a V10 engine is - tho I can't imagine they've missed the fact it costs them a fortune to fuel

and yes, they still have it - but this digital dash st means I can't tell you how few miles it's done...

If you drive it hard you won't be driving it for long copjudge !
Great car. I too miss the Bangle Beemers. Just wouldn't have the cherries for an M6 on running costs alone, but glad there are others more committed.

spot on .. plenty of family wagons can match it for speed, and beat it too .. but when you push that screaming V10 right round to 8250rpm, it just lights a fire inside you every time.
This was the only car that actually gave my mate a bloody nose, just accelerating hard up a slip road

Had one of the first E63's in the country and it was awesome, you have to drive these S85 engined cars to appreciate how relentless they are!
